Malone University unveiled its new Pioneer mascot at the University's Homecoming football game last Saturday at Fawcett Stadium in a historic pre-game introduction prior to the kickoff against St. Xavier (IL) University.
Bursting through a cloud of smoke and running onto the field to the cheers of several thousand fans, “JW Scout” made his inaugural appearance as the official Malone athletics mascot “come to life”. The head of the new mascot's costume closely resembles the new Pioneer athletics logo that was created three years ago when Malone College became Malone University. The mascot was named after Malone co-founder J. Walter Malone and the name Scout was added to capture the full “Pioneering” spirit of Malone University and Pioneer athletics.
Throughout Malone's 54-year history in Canton, although a “Pioneer character”, perhaps donned in a coonskin cap or otherwise, may have surfaced at Malone athletic events, particularly in the first 40 years or so, this is the first true Pioneer head and costume that has been created to serve as the official Pioneer athletics mascot.
In addition, while JW Scout will now appear at many of Malone's home athletic events, particularly at football and men's and women's basketball games, the University's “spirit character” Maxamoose will continue to appear alongside JW Scout at many of the same events.
Look for JW Scout again this Saturday (Oct. 15th) !! -- at the Malone vs. Walsh University football game at Fawcett Stadium. Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m.
