Box Score

The Malone University women's basketball team suffered a 56-49 loss at home on Tuesday evening in an American Mideast Conference game against Ursuline College. After trailing by as many as 13 points early in the second half, the Pioneers managed to fight back into the game, rattling off 10 unanswered points to pull in front 37-35 with under eight minutes to play. However, Ursuline answered with a bucket on its next possession to tie the game at 37 and then never trailed again as it outscored Malone 12-5 over the final four minutes to secure the victory. With the win, the Arrows snapped a five-game losing streak, improving their record to 4-13 overall and 1-3 in the AMC. Malone, meanwhile, fell to 5-11 overall and 1-2 in the conference with the tough defeat.

Despite being held scoreless over the first seven minutes of the contest, the Pioneers managed to keep Ursuline from pulling away as the Arrows went to the locker room at intermission holding a 22-17 lead. A 10-2 scoring spurt at the start of the second period gave Ursuline a double-digit advantage before Malone clawed back to take its first and only lead midway through the final stanza.

Both teams struggled to get their offenses on track for much of the evening, combining for a total of 48 turnovers – 25 for the Arrows and 23 for the Pioneers. Ursuline knocked down 19 of 61 (31.1%) field goals, one of 14 (7.1%) three-pointers and 17 of 25 (68.0%) free throws. Malone countered by connecting on 16 of 58 (27.6%) shots from the field, two of 19 (10.5%) attempts from beyond the three-point arc and 15 of 22 (68.2%) tries from the charity stripe. Each team blocked four shots and handed out seven assists apiece. The Arrows held a significant edge on the glass, though, as they out-rebounded the Pioneers by a 54-40 margin and turned 22 offensive boards into 21 second-chance points.

Guard Allyson Wilson notched her third straight double-double for Malone by posting 10 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four steals. Forward Alison Schloz added nine points, four boards and two blocked shots while forward Sarah VanVoorhis came off the bench to register seven points, nine rebounds and two assists.

Center Jaylene Taylor led the way for the Arrows with 15 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and two blocks while forward Katie Cappello contributed 13 points and five rebounds.

The Pioneers will look to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to South Euclid, Ohio for a 2:00 p.m. AMC match-up with Notre Dame College. The Falcons, currently 12-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference, were ranked 25th in the most recent NAIA Division II National Poll.
