11th-Ranked Daemen Pulls Away Early For 74-49 Victory Over Malone

Guard Allyson Wilson posted 12 points and 10 rebounds in the defeat, marking her eighth double-double of the season

The Malone University women's basketball team lost an American Mideast Conference contest at home to NAIA Div. II #11 Daemen (NY) College on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 74-49. The Wildcats took command of the match-up early on, jumping out to a 17-2 lead five minutes into the game. Daemen's advantage then ballooned to 43-18 at halftime as the visitors held the Pioneers to just five field goals over the first 20 minutes. The two squads each tallied 31 points apiece in the second stanza, but the Wildcats' big first half proved to be the difference in the 25-point win. With the loss, Malone's record dropped to 5-16 overall and to 1-7 in the AMC while Daemen stretched its winning streak to nine games, improving to 19-3 overall and to 9-0 in the conference.

Senior guard Allyson Wilson paced the Malone squad with 12 points to go along with 10 rebounds, which marked her second double-double in as many games this weekend for the team. She also dished out a team-best three assists. Senior guard Amy Kittle followed with 10 points and two assists while freshman forward Sarah VanVoorhis tossed in eight points and tallied four rebounds.

Forward Bridgette Burke paced Daemen with 26 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Forward Sarah Soroka followed with 23 points, seven boards and three blocked shots.

For the game, Daeman shot 47.6% from the field (30-63) while Malone sank just 23.4% of its attempts (18-77). Each team took 16 attempts from three-point range with the Wildcats hitting four and the Pioneers converting three. At the line, Malone sank 10 of 13 attempts for 76.9% while Daemen drilled 10 of 14 for 71.4%. In addition, the Wildcats held a narrow 49-48 edge in total rebounds, posted a convincing 13-2 advantage in blocked shots and outscored the Pioneers by a 48-20 margin in the paint.

Malone will look to bounce back on Thursday when the squad travels to West Mifflin, Pennsylvania for a 6:00 p.m. contest against Point Park (PA) University (11-8 overall, 3-5 AMC).
