Box Score

The Malone University women's basketball team picked its first victory of the young 2010-11 season, in just the second game of the campaign, by posting a thrilling 79-76 road victory at Cincinnati Christian University Tuesday evening. The Pioneers trailed 38-32 at the half but outscored the Eagles 47-38 in the second period to pull out the three-point victory.

With the game tied at 76-76, Pioneer guard Amy Kittle drilled a three-point shot with 15 seconds remaining to give the team the lead for good as the Malone defense did not allow the hosts to score in their final attempt before the buzzer. With the victory, Malone improved to 1-1 on the season while Cincinnati Christian fell to 2-1 on the year.

On the evening, the Pioneers connected on 26 of 48 field goal attempts (54.2%), five of eight three-point shots (62.5%) and drilled 22 of 29 attempts at the charity stripe (75.9%). CCU took many more shots from the floor (65) but hit on just 29 for 44.6%. The Eagles were 4 of 10 from three-point range (40.0%) and 14 of 24 from the free throw line (58.3%). The Pioneers out-rebounded the Eagles 36 to 33.

Kittle led Malone in scoring for the second straight game, this time with 28 points. Her percentages were near perfect as she was 9-for-10 from the field (90.0%), three-for-three from beyond the arc (100.0%) and seven of nine at the line (77.8%). She also grabbed four rebounds and posted a team-best three steals on the night.

Forward Sarah VanVoorhis followed with 18 points (7-10 from the field) while yanking down five rebounds. Guard Ashley Speicher also reached double digits with 10 points. Forward Alison Schloz paced the team in rebounds with nine while guard Allyson Wilson, who had nine points, grabbed seven boards. The Eagles had four in double figures and were led by Heather Sandlin with 15 points.

The Pioneers will take to the road this weekend for a two-game swing in New York. On Friday, the team will play at Houghton College at 8:00 p.m. and then, on Saturday, will face Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
