The Malone University men's golf team posted an impressive victory among a 15-team field at the NCAA Div. I Cleveland State University Invitational (Telich/Sunlife Financial) at the Canterbury Golf Course in Beachwood, Ohio on Monday. In an event that was shortened from two days to one day due to inclement weather on Tuesday morning, the Pioneers emerged victorious over the 36-hole event with a score of 581 (297-284) to defend their team title from a year ago. The victory was just the second Malone win at an NCAA Div. I tournament (including last year's CSU win) in the history of the Malone men's golf program.
After one round, the Pioneers were tied for fifth place but just four strokes behind first-round leader Oakland (MI) University. But with a second round score of 284, which was nine strokes better than any other team recorded for round two, Malone cruised to a six-stroke victory overall with a 13-over-par score of 581.
Oakland took second at 587 (293-294), Austin Peay State (TN) University placed third at 589 (296-293), Wright State University came in fourth at 590 (294-296) and Cleveland State rounded out the top five at 591 (297-294).
Malone's
Justin Lower (Sr., Northwest H.S.) defended his individual title from last year's CSU event by posting a one-stroke victory this year, with a score of 141 (71-70), over teammate
Richie Schembechler (Jr., Massillon Wash. H.S.), who tallied a 142 (71-71). Incredibly, Lower has now won four straight tournaments (including the two tournaments this year and the last two from last season), which sets a new Malone men's golf record for consecutive tournaments won. Lower broke the old record of three set by Russ Holden in 1981.
Zach Keller (Sr., Wynford H.S.) tied for 16
th overall, posting a score of 148 (46-42) while
Quinn Parker (Sr., Canton Central Catholic H.S.) was next for Malone in 22
nd at 150 (79-71).
Jay Hollifield (So., Louisville H.S.) also competed for Malone and finished in 74
th at 165 (84-81).
The Malone A team will next compete at the Red Poling (MI) Intercollegiate Classic on Thursday (Oct. 7).
