Football Preview Notes: Malone vs. Trinity International

Series:
The Pioneers hold a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Trojans and have won each of the last three meetings between the teams, including a 48-12 Halloween night victory last season at Fawcett Stadium.

Coaches:
Malone – Eric Hehman is in his first season as the Pioneers' head coach after spending the last five years as the head coach at NCAA Division III Greenville (IL) College. Overall, Hehman tallied a 28-22 record at Greenville, leading the Panthers to a 7-3 record in 2009 and a berth in the NCCAA Victory Bowl.

Trinity International – Kirk Wherritt is in his first season as a head coach after having spent the last two seasons as the Trojans' offensive coordinator. Wherritt served as an offensive graduate assistant at the University of Nevada Las Vegas prior to his arrival at Trinity International.

Malone Notes:
The Pioneers lost to local rival Walsh University at Fawcett Stadium on Saturday by a final score of 24-21…Malone fought back from a 24-7 deficit with two quick touchdowns mid-way through the fourth quarter…However, the Pioneers were unable to complete the comeback as the NAIA No. 19 Cavaliers sealed the win with an interception in the final minutes…Malone currently ranks fourth in the 16-team MSFA (11th overall in the NAIA) in rushing offense with an average of 231.6 yards per game.

Malone players to watch:
RB Markus McFolling has piled up 625 rushing yards on 119 attempts (5.3 average) with four touchdowns…McFolling's average of 89.3 yards per game ranks fourth in the MSFA and 22nd overall in the NAIA… QB Mike Karls has completed 28 of 67 pass attempts on the year for 450 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions…Karls is also the second-leading rusher on the team with 235 yards on 66 attempts (3.6 average), including a long run of 45 yards and one rushing TD…WR Matt Kiel has pulled in 14 catches for 233 yards and two scores through the Pioneers' first six contests…TE Tom Ferron has also contributed to the passing game with nine catches for 143 yards and one score…Slot Back Justin McLean broke the Malone all-time record for the longest run from scrimmage with an 82-yard dash to the endzone against Walsh…McLean is currently averaging 8.1 yards per carry on 17 rushing attempts…On the defensive side of the ball, LB Antonio Scassa leads the squad with 53 total tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack…Scassa has also forced a fumble and intercepted a pass…DB Isaiah Wyatt follows with 43 tackles and six pass break-ups while LB Dexter Reed has made 38 total stops with 6.5 tackles for loss… DL Cody Carroll has also registered 38 total tackles and ranks seventh in the NAIA with 6.5 total sacks.

Trinity International Notes:
The Trojans fell at home to Taylor (IN) University last Saturday by a final score of 25-10…Trinity International trailed by just five points at halftime but then was outscored 13-3 in the second half…Although they did rack up 41 points in a victory at Olivet Nazarene (IL) University on Oct. 9th, the Trojans have been held to 10 points or fewer in each of their six losses…TIU ranks fifth in the MSFA with a +4 turnover margin as the squad has recovered six fumbles and intercepted 16 passes through its first nine games.

Trinity International players to watch:
QB Scott Stanick has completed 58 of 119 pass attempts this season for 622 yards with six touchdowns and eight interceptions… RB Cole Bamberger has recorded 445 rushing yards on 127 carries with one touchdown…Bamberger has also contributed in the passing game with 17 receptions for 115 yards and two scores…TE Bruce Palmer has caught four touchdown passes and leads the team in both receptions (19) and receiving yards (304)…K Jason Owens has connected on five of his six field-goal attempts… LB Tyler Boblit leads the way for the Trojan defense with 75 total tackles, including seven tackles for loss and three sacks…Boblit has also picked off three passes and forced two fumbles…Fellow LB Senuell Smith follows with 50 total tackles and one interception…LB Thomas Denne has made 49 stops on the year…DL Kyle Mowen has registered 45 total tackles with three sacks and one fumble recovery…DL Matt Williams has made 24 total tackles and leads the team with five sacks…DB Dominique Rogers has broken up 11 passes and made two interceptions…DB Shawn Sweet ranks fifth in the NAIA with five interceptions.
