Football Preview Notes: Malone vs. Walsh

Series:
The Cavaliers lead the all-time series between the two schools 9-6. The Pioneers had won three in a row over Walsh before the Cavaliers pocketed a 31-14 victory last season. The winner of the annual rivalry contest receives the rotating Dick Gallagher Memorial Trophy, named in honor of the late and former Executive Director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Coaches:
Malone – Eric Hehman is in his first season as the Pioneers' head coach after spending the last five years as the head coach at NCAA Division III Greenville (IL) College. Overall, Hehman tallied a 28-22 record at Greenville, leading the Panthers to a 7-3 record in 2009 and a berth in the NCCAA Victory Bowl.

Walsh – Jim Dennison is in his 16th season at Walsh and has guided the Cavaliers to a 109-61 mark, including a 5-2 record this fall. Overall, Dennison has compiled a 189-123-2 record in 29 seasons of coaching college football.

Malone Notes:
The Pioneers lost at home to NAIA #3 Saint Xavier (IL) University this past Saturday by a final score of 55-16…The Cougars tallied all of their points in the first half, engineering touchdown drives on each of their first eight possessions to put the game away after the first two quarters…Malone currently ranks fourth in the 16-team MSFA (ninth overall in the NAIA) in rushing offense with an average of 239.7 yards per game…The Pioneer defense ranks fifth in the conference (19th in the NAIA) against the run, allowing an average of 102.0 rushing yards through its first six games.

Malone players to watch:
RB Markus McFolling has piled up 573 rushing yards on 100 attempts (5.7 average) with four touchdowns…McFolling's average of 95.5 yards per game ranks third in the MSFA and 17th overall in the NAIA… QB Mike Karls has completed 24 of 53 pass attempts on the year for 403 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions…Karls is also the second-leading rusher on the team with 236 yards on 60 attempts (3.9 average), including a long run of 45 yards and one rushing TD…WR Matt Kiel has pulled in 13 catches for 228 yards and two scores through the Pioneers' first six contests…TE Tom Ferron has also contributed to the passing game with eight catches for 121 yards and one score…On the defensive side of the ball, LB Antonio Scassa leads the squad with 42 total tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack…Scassa has also forced a fumble and intercepted a pass…DB Isaiah Wyatt follows with 36 tackles and four pass break-ups while LB Matt Vick has made 32 total stops with one interception…DB Willie Pearson has made 28 total tackles with two interceptions and six pass break-ups…DL Cody Carroll has totaled 5.5 sacks, the sixth most in the NAIA .

Walsh Notes:
The Cavaliers, ranked 19th in the most recent NAIA National Poll, fell 21-17 at home to Taylor (IN) University on Saturday despite outgaining the Trojans 454-265 in total yards…Walsh held a 17-7 lead at halftime of Saturday's contest but was then outscored 14-0 over the final two quarters…The Cavaliers rank second in the MSFA (fourth overall in the NAIA) in rushing with an average of 272 yards on the ground per game…Walsh also leads the conference in rushing defense (87.3 rushing yards allowed per game) and turnover margin (+ 12) while ranking third in both scoring offense (35.0 points per contest) and scoring defense (15.6 points allowed per outing).

Walsh players to watch:
RB Dominic Williams, the NAIA's leading rusher, has gained 1080 rushing yards on 160 attempts (6.8 average) with eight touchdowns…Since returning from injury, RB Clinton Blossomgame has also been a force in the Cavalier backfield as he has racked up 446 rushing yards on 71 attempts (6.3 average) with five TD's… QB Jim Shiplett has completed 73 of 131 passing attempts (55.7%) for 1033 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions…WR Joe Morgan has tallied a team-best 29 pass receptions for 492 yards and three TD's…K Eric Buchanan has made seven of 10 field-goal tries and all 31 of his extra point attempts on the year…DB Pat Kane has tallied a team-high 63 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss and three interceptions…LB Cody Kilar has registered 47 total tackles, including 3.0 tackles for loss and one sack…LB Maurice Jones has made 41 total tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery…DB Chris Bivins has picked off four passes so far this season.
