LILBURN, Ga. - The Malone University women's basketball team has made it's first appearance in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Coaches Poll in the #25 slot. The Pioneers received votes in the preseason poll and each of the first two weeks, but are still undefeated at 6-0 and have entered the national rankings in week three.
Grand Valley State University is atop the poll once again at 6-0. Malone is one of four teams from the Midwest Region in the national rankings. The Pioneers are behind Grand Valley State (#1), Northern Michigan University (#17) and Ferris State University (#18).
Â
Malone was on the road last week against a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponents in Lake Superior State University and Davenport University. The Pioneers held off a feisty Laker squad 69-63 and withstood a late charge by the Panthers, 70-56.
Â
Despite their lowest percentage shooting performances of the season in the team's most recent games, Malone now leads the nation in three-point shooting percentage at 42.5%. Redshirt sophomore
Meredith Randulic leads the team with a 61.5% three-point field goal percentage, and was a perfect 4-for-4 on attempts from long range last week. The defense is holding opponents to just 27.6% from deep.
Â
Along with their efforts from downtown, the Pioneers also have four different student-athletes who have met minimums in field goal percentage who are above 50.0%. These are junior
Elena Oliver (61.9%), senior
Brinn Hunt (57.7%), Randulic (53.6%) and senior
Erin Kaufman (50.7%).
Â
Malone will test their efficiency in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play, beginning with the Ursuline College Arrows on Thursday, December 4 at 5:30 P.M.
