AKRON, Ohio -- Wednesday afternoon the Malone University baseball team took on the University of Akron in the Pioneers' final non-conference game of the 2023 season.
Malone jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over the NCAA Division I Zips, and never looked back on their way to a 13-9 win.
This is the third consecutive win for Malone over Akron in the all-time series. The Pioneers beat the Zips 11-5 in 2021 and 13-12 in 2022.

HIGHLIGHTS
The Pioneers jumped all over the Zips in the top of the first inning.
The first three batters of the inning reached safely.
Tyson Gingerich, who led off the game with a single, came in to score on
Anthony Ryan's RBI single.
Anthony Bartiromo added a two-RBI double. He later scored on an Akron error to make it 4-0 Pioneers after the top of the first.
Malone's pitching staff, who had 11 different players throw in the contest, kept the Zips bats off balance until the third inning.
Akron got two runs in the third, and another in the fourth inning to make it a 4-3 game.
Devin Brown had Malone's answer in the top of the fifth inning as he hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to stretch Malone's lead out to 6-3.
Unfortunately the Zips got both of those runs right back in their half of the inning.
A three-run sixth inning by the Pioneers helped give Malone breathing room. A two-RBI single by
Allen Diaz and a sacrifice fly by
Tyson Gingerich pushed Malone's lead back out to 8-5.
Akron hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Pioneers continued to add to their total the rest of the way.
Jake Aleman came through with a RBI double in the seventh inning.
Clayton Criss also had a sac fly in the inning.
MU added another run each in the eighth and ninth inning which proved to be crucial.
The Zips scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, and had the bases loaded with the tying run at the plate before
Danny Miller ended the rally to secure Malone's 13-9 win.
DETAILS
- Anthony Bartiromo led Malone's offense by going 4-5 at the plate. He scored all four times he was on base.
- Tyson Gingerich and Devin Brown each had a pair of hits. Brown had a team-high 3 RBIs
- 11 different pitchers combined for 9 strikeouts on the day.
- Caesen Sutton was credited with his second win of the season. Danny Miller nailed down his fifth save.
WHAT'S NEXT
This weekend, Malone is at home for the final time in the 2023 season.
The Pioneers will host Hillsdale College in a four-game Great Midwest Athletic Conference series.
The series begins on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at the University of Akron's Skeeles Field.
The series concludes on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium.
