Pioneers Sweep Four-Game Great Midwest Athletic Conference Series from Lake Erie

CANTON, Ohio -- The Malone University baseball team continued their recent homestand, this time with a four-game, Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) series against the Lake Erie College Storm. 

The Pioneers took all four games from the Storm for a series sweep, and have now won five out of their six games overall.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SERIES
  • Tyson Gingerich led Malone's offense with an even .500 batting average in the series. He was 7-14 at the plate. He also scored 7 runs, had 5 RBIs, and stole a pair of bases. Gingerich is now hitting .448 on the season, just four points behind the G-MAC leaders. 
  • Anthony Bartiromo was the RBI leader for the Pioneers with 6 on the weekend. He had a pair of RBIs in three of the four games. 
  • Mitch Maurer toed the rubber for Malone in the series opener. He allowed just three hits, and no runs, over seven full innings of work to earn his fifth win of the season. 
  • Evan Balzano, Devin Brown, Anthony Bartiromo, and Allen Diaz all posted batting averages north of .300 in the series. Each of those players also had multiple RBIs on the weekend. 
  • Anthony Ryan's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning in the second game gave the Pioneers a 9-8 walk-off win. 
  • Danny Miller made two appearances on the mound in the series, both in relief. In four full of innings of work he struck out eight Lake Erie batters. His perfect ninth inning in game four nailed down his fourth save of the season. 
  • The Pioneer pitching staff combined to strike out a total of 36 batters on the weekend. 
  • As a team Malone posted a .325 batting average in the series. 
  • This weekend was the first G-MAC sweep for the Pioneers since May of 2021 when Malone took all four games from Ohio Valley University. 
WHAT'S NEXT
Malone will close out the non-conference portion of the 2023 regular season on Wednesday with a quick trip north to play the University of Akron. The Pioneers have won the last two meetings against the NCAA Division I Zips. 

Wednesday's first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
