CANTON -- After 22 straight games away from home to open the season, the Malone University baseball team played their 2023 home opener on Tuesday afternoon.
The Pioneers used 13 hits to score 7 runs in a 7-4 win over West Virginia State.
The win gives Malone the season sweep of the Yellow Jackets. Earlier in the season MU swept a doubleheader at WVSU.

HIGHLIGHTS
It took three innings, but the Yellow Jackets were the first team on the scoreboard. WVSU plated a pair of runs on two hits in the top of the fourth inning.
The Pioneers responded right back however.
MU sent 7 men to the plate in their half of the inning. Four of them came around to score.
JC Philippi,
Boston Black,
Allen Diaz, and
Anthony Bartiromo each had two-out RBIs in the inning for Malone.
Jackson Phelps, who got the start on the mound, worked out of a jam in the top of the fifth inning to limit WVSU to just one run.
An RBI double from
Anthony Ryan and RBI single from
Clayton Criss made it 6-3 in favor of the Pioneers after five complete innings.
Malone got another insurance run on a RBI double from Diaz in the sixth.
The Yellow Jackets rallied in the eighth, but
Michael Paljich limited the damage to just one run.
William Rouse shut the door in the ninth inning for his first save of the season.

Malone will open up a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) series with Cedarville University on Thursday night.
