Late Inning Struggles Hurt Malone in 7-2 Loss to Ashland

CANTON -- Malone University and Ashland University continued their weekend Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) series on Saturday afternoon with a single nine-inning game at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium.

The Eagles (17-9, 10-4 G-MAC) scored four runs in the sixth inning, and added two more insurance runs in the ninth to hand the Pioneers (12-17, 3-9 G-MAC) a 7-2 loss.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Ashland opened up the scoring with a RBI single in the top of the second inning.

After a quiet start to the game, Malone's offense broke through in the fourth.

Evan Balzano drew a leadoff walk. Cameron Martin then followed with a double over the left fielder's head to score Balzano all of the way from first base.

The Eagles went to the bullpen for a pitching change, but it did not take MU long to load the bases on back-to-back walks by Boston Black and Evan Swan. Andrew Hanna drew the fourth walk for the Pioneers in the inning which allowed Martin to score and put Malone up 2-1.

Chase Jessee continued his strong outing on the mound by working out of a jam to keep the Eagles scoreless in the fifth.

Unfortunately things went sideways for the Pioneers in the sixth. Ashland scored four runs on four hits to move ahead 5-2.

Malone had several scoring opportunities down the stretch, but struggled to get the crucial run-scoring hit. For the second consecutive game the Pioneers stranded double-digit runners on base.

The Eagles added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth, and then retired Malone in order in the bottom half of the inning to secure the 7-2 win.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Chase Jessee made his fifth start of the season on the mound. His final line showed 5.0 innings pitched, and just four hits and one earned run allowed. He also struck out four Ashland batters.
  • Tyson Gingerich and Cameron Martin each had multiple hits on the day for Malone. Martin's RBI in the fourth inning gives him a team-leading 29 on the season.
  • Cooper Davies pitched 3.2 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed just one earned run, and struck out four batters.
WHAT'S NEXT?
