Malone Splits Saturday's Doubleheader at Lake Erie

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- On Saturday the Malone University softball team was on the road for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) doubleheader at Lake Erie College.

The host Storm (5-13, 1-3 G-MAC) took the opener by a 1-0 score, but the Pioneers (6-11, 2-4 G-MAC) bounced back in the second game to pick up a 4-2 win.

Game 1 Highlights
Offense was at an absolute premium in the first game. Both sides went for just ten combined hits.

Lake Erie came away with the lone run of the contest on a RBI single in the bottom of the third.

The Pioneers had base runners in five of the seven innings, but could not come up with the clutch run-scoring hit.

Despite some of their struggles at the plate, MU was flawless defensively in the field.

Elizabeth Dyke pitched all six innings in the circle. She scattered six LEC hits, struck out one batter, and allowed just the one earned run.

Game 2 Highlights
The offensive struggles from the opener were quickly put to rest in the top of the first inning of the second game.

Erika Johnson reached base to lead off the game. She later came around to score on a ball that Mikayla Kesel put in play to give the Pioneers the early 1-0 lead.

After the Storm answered with their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the second, MU went right back to work in the top of the fourth.

Emilly Betts brought home both Lexi Betz and Lauren Bennett to put Malone back on top 3-2.

Kesel's RBI single in the fifth to score Karlie Duvall gave the Pioneers a much needed insurance run.

Jensen Miller kept Lake Erie off the scoreboard the rest of the way to secure the 4-2 Malone win.

PIONEER POINTS
  • April Howser led the Pioneers at the plate with three hits. Mikayla Kesel was the only MU player with multiple hits, she finished with two.
  • Coming off of winning the G-MAC Pitcher of the Week award, Jensen Miller hurled her fifth complete game of the season in the second game. She struck out a pair of Lake Erie batters to earn her fourth win of the season.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Malone closes out the weekend with a G-MAC doubleheader at Ursuline College tomorrow.

First pitch in game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
