CANTON -- Malone University and the University of Findlay returned to Thurman Munson Stadium on Monday to put a wrap on their Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) series with another doubleheader.
The Pioneers (9-10, 1-3 G-MAC) lost an early lead in the first game that finished with a 6-2 Malone loss.
The Oilers (9-14, 5-3 G-MAC) held off a furious comeback attempt by Malone to take the second game by a final score of 12-10.
Today's doubleheader sweep gives Findlay the 3-1 series win.
Game 1 Highlights
Danny Miller worked around a pair of Oiler singles in the top of the first to keep Findlay off of the scoreboard, and Malone's offense provided some immediate run support in the bottom half.
Tyson Gingerich led off with a single. He came around to score later in the inning on a perfectly executed double steal that put the Pioneers up 1-0.
After Miller posted another zero in the top of the second,
Eric Baum's RBI single to score
Evan Balzano in the bottom of the inning put MU ahead 2-0.
Unfortunately that was the last Malone run of the game.
Findlay broke through for three runs in the top of the fifth, and then added three more to their total in the seventh.
The Oilers retired the Pioneers in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to finish off the 6-2 win.
Game 2 Highlights
Findlay opened up the second game with a run in the top of the first. However, the Pioneers answered back quickly.
Malone loaded the bases to start the bottom of the second inning.
JC Philippi scored on a fielder's choice, and
Jake Aleman was brought home on
Tyson Gingerich's RBI single to put Malone ahead 2-1.
Unfortunately the Oilers erupted for eight runs on eight hits and a MU error in the top of the fourth to go ahead 9-2.
Malone was able to rally back.
The Pioneers plated five runs themselves in the bottom of the inning to get back into the game.
Petey Taylor,
Cameron Martin,
Evan Balzano, and
JC Philippi each had RBIs for Malone in the inning.
The comeback did not stop there.
After
Cooper Davies retired the side in order in both the fifth and sixth innings, Malone came back to tie the game in their half of the sixth inning.
Balzano doubled home Martin, and
Jake Aleman's single scored Balzano to make the score 9-9.
The Oilers answered with a run in the seventh, and then added two more to their total in the eighth.
A
Jake Aleman RBI double in the bottom of the eighth pulled the Pioneers to within two runs, but Malone could not complete the comeback.
Once again Findlay sat MU down in order in the final inning to hang on for the 12-10 win.
