AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Malone University baseball team returned to the Lake Myrtle Sports Park Facility on Thursday for a scheduled doubleheader with the University of Sioux Falls.
The Cougars (6-5, 0-0 NSIC) scored six runs in the final three innings to pick up a 6-1 win in the first game.
The second game was halted due to weather with the Pioneers (7-6, 0-0 G-MAC) leading 4-0 with two on and two out in the bottom of the fourth inning.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Danny Miller worked around a leadoff single in the first to keep Sioux Falls off the scoreboard, and Malone's offense went right to work in the bottom half of the inning.
Tyson Gingerich led off the inning with a single. He advanced to second base on a Cougar error, stole third base one batter later, and then came in to score the game's first run on a wild pitch.
Unfortunately, that was the only run of the game for the Pioneers.
Miller and the defense were able to keep Sioux Falls off balance for the majority of the game, but the Cougars finally broke through late.
They scored four runs on three hits and one MU error in the top of the fifth. They also added a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh to go up 6-1.
The Pioneers were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh inning, and USF picked up the win.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Malone will play D'Youville College at 9:15 tomorrow morning. The Pioneers will then resume the second game with Sioux Falls at approximately 12:30 p.m.
Both games will take place on Field #6 at Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale.
