Malone Defense Puts Up a Tough Fight, but Falls 3-0 to #13 Ohio Valley

CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University men's soccer team were unsuccessful in their upset bid of NCAA DII #13 Ohio Valley University on Monday. After a scoreless first half, Ohio Valley pulled away in the second half to a 3-0 win. The match was contested in wet conditions and at the Pro Football Hall of Fame National Youth Football & Sports Complex.
 
Malone goes into the final weekend of the regular season with a 1-6-0 record, with all seven games coming against Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) opponents. Ohio Valley wins their sixth straight game and remains undefeated at 6-0-0 in the conference.
 
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
Malone went with an all defensive gameplan in the match, trying to limit the space of the Fighting Scots. At the end of the day, Ohio Valley possessed the ball for two-thirds of the pitch time.
 
It was not until the 15th minute when Ohio Valley put a shot on goal, but the Pioneer goalkeeper Nick Wilhelm made the save. Wilhelm and the Malone defense kept the game scoreless through the first 45 minutes as Wilhelm made five first half saves.
 
13 minutes into the second period, Ohio Valley finally broke through for a goal after firing 19 shots towards the net. The Fighting Scots put together another offensive rally in the 74th minute to add an insurance goal.
 
Nathan McFeaters was able to break free for a shot in the 77th minute in a comeback attempt that feel feeble.
 
A few minutes later, Ohio Valley tacked on a third goal to solidify the win. Patrick Alvarez forced the Fighting Scot keeper to make a save in the final minute of play off of a free kick.

Malone men's soccer travels to Cedarville University on Thursday, April 15, needing three points to make a final postseason push. The match will be played under the lights at 7 pm Thursday night.
