The Malone University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Valley University on Thursday by a score of 102-63. The 39-point win is the largest margin of victory the Pioneers have attained this season. The Malone men followed the women's game with a wire-to-wire victory, the first time this season both teams achieved the feat in a double header.
Â
The win advances the Pioneer record to 12-10 overall in the 2019-20 season, and 6-6 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. Ohio Valley falls to 4-18 overall and 1-11 in the G-MAC.
Â
Recap:
Malone had it in their minds not to repeat the previous game in the series where the Pioneers needed a ferocious comeback to down the Fighting Scots, and jumped out to a 10-0 run in the first two minutes of play. Scores on four of the first five possessions included a three-point jumper from
Daylan Haynie, a pair of jump shots from
Jaret Majestic, (one from distance), and a lay-up from
Sehill Mouliom.
Â
Majestic cashed in on another shot from deep and
Eli Ramsey joined in with a trifecta of his own less than two minutes later to give the Pioneers a 17-5 lead heading into the first media timeout.
Â
To end the first half, Malone extended an already sizable lead with a 20-7 run over the final seven minutes. An 11-point advantage ballooned into a 24-point gap before the teams entered halftime. A steal from
Jaret Majestic led to an increasingly popular
Marcus Ernst dunk with 38 ticks left to put an exclamation point on an offensive barrage.
Â
At the intermission, the Pioneers led 57-33. It is the third time this season Malone has been on pace to score 100 total points at the half. From the field, the Pioneers shot an impressive 20-of-33 for 60.6% at the break. Majestic sank five of Malone's 10 three-point shots in the period and led the Pioneers with 21 first half points.
Â
Pace slowed in the second half as 28 fouls led to 33 combined free throws in the second stanza. An 11-2 spurt for the Pioneers towards the beginning of the half put any comeback hopes to bed for Ohio Valley with the game at 70-39.
Bo Myers suck seven consecutive free throws that went unmatched offensively by the Fighting Scots to further extend the lead to 80-44.
Â
Just under halfway through the second period,
Daylan Haynie assisted
Sehill Mouliom on a lob play that resulted in an emphatic two-hand jam. Less than a minute later, Mouliom struck again, this time with a tomahawk dunk in transition to put Malone at an 86-46 advantage.
Â
Myers would go on another run, scoring seven straight points and giving the Pioneers their largest advantage of the game at +43 with under eight minutes to go.
