Men’s Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw Against Roberts Wesleyan

The Malone University men's soccer team drew in their match versus Roberts Wesleyan 1-1. After 90 minutes of play, the teams combated in two 10-minute overtime periods with no one giving an inch. Malone returns home from their trip to New York with a record of 1-0-1. Roberts Wesleyan moves to 0-1-1.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the opening minutes of the game, but around the 30 minute mark, the Pioneers began to dominate the ball offensively.

Shots were taken by Evan Dekker, Gino Finelli, Simon Eybert and Patrick Brightbill, but the Redhawk keeper Joe McNulty was able to thwart the Pioneer goal scoring opportunities.

Just when Roberts thought the attack was over, Nathan McFeaters struck for a goal in the 40th minute off a corner kick by Gino Finelli and the Pioneers would take the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Malone came out in the second half firing more shots at McNulty, but he made three crucial saves to keep the Redhawks within striking distance.

After a costly Pioneer penalty, Alex Perez Vega converted on a penalty kick to knot the game up at one. Both this goal and the only goal scored in Thursday's game against Daemen College were via penalty kicks.

Roberts was forced to play with a man down after a player was hit with a red car in the 83rd minute, but were able to force overtime and did not allow a goal in the closing minutes.

The first overtime saw only one shot a piece with no one able to put the game away.

In overtime number two, both teams saw the end was near and looked to net the golden goal. Roberts was able to get three shots up, but all of them went wide. Malone had two goal scoring opportunities and both of those fell through, resulting in the 1-1 tie.

As a team, Malone took 20 shots (12 on goal) compared to Roberts shooting 15 shots and only five on goal. McNulty saved 11 shots and goalkeeper Alexandre Durand made saves on four Redhawk attempts.

Patrick Alvarez, Simon Eybert and Austin Coldsnow each recorded three shot attempts, along with two attempts each from Patrick Brightbill, Evan Dekker, Gino Finelli and Nathan McFeaters.

Nick Fry and Jonathan Dendinger steadied the Pioneer defense by playing all 110 minutes of the match.

The Pioneers return to Canton and will host Lake Erie on September 10 at 4 pm. It will be both the home and conference opener for Malone.
