The Malone University men's soccer team lost to Lake Erie Tuesday afternoon by a score of 1-0. The game was scoreless after 90 minutes and went to overtime, where Lake Erie's Jonathon Carr ended the game with a chip that just skipped past goalkeeper
Alexandre Durand's grasp. It was the first home game of the season for the Pioneers.
Â
The Pioneers go to 1-1-1 on the season, 0-1-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Storm remain undefeated at 3-0-0 and begin conference play with a win.
Â
The first half saw the two teams really feel each other out. No one could find a rhythm offensively and saw both squads struggle to get good opportunities towards the net. Lake Erie got four shots off, none of them on goal, and Malone fired two at Storm keeper Tom John, both of which were saved.
Â
Pace of play quickened in the second half, as both teams saw better looks at netting a goal. Lake Erie dominated the ball early and had a few opportunities, but none were better than in the 64th minute, when the Storm fired three at the net and all of them were sent away.
Â
Late in the period, the Pioneers looked like they had finally built some momentum. Over the last three minutes of regulation, the ball stuck close to the Malone attacking zone, but they couldn't quite get the ball across the white line.
Â
A pair of corners from
Gino Finelli resulted in some heart stopping moments for the Pioneer faithful, but alas, 90 minutes was not enough for either team to come away with the victory.
Â
In the overtime period, the ball stayed in the Storm attacking zone most of the time. After a clearance in the 97th minute, the Storm raced up the sideline and Rodrigo Bonfim had a wonderful lead pass to Carr to start the breakaway. Durand got just a piece of the shot, but it still found its way through the posts to seal the 1-0 victory for Lake Erie.
Â
As a team, the Pioneers recorded seven shots, two on goal, compared to Lake Erie who took 18 shots with seven on goal.
Â
Gino Finelli,
Nick Fry,
Patrick Brightbill,
Patrick Alvarez,
Austin Coldsnow,
Nathan McFeaters and
Justin Betts were the Malone shot takers.
Â
Alexandre Durand finished with six saves in net.
Â
Defending G-MAC Defensive Player of the Week Tom John recorded his third consecutive shutout in net for Lake Erie.
Â
The Pioneers will be on the
Jack Hazen Field next on Saturday, September 14 for Homecoming Weekend when the team takes on California (PA) at 5 pm.
