Game Recap: Softball | | Bailey Byers' Bat Lifts Pioneers to Win on Final Day of Florida Trip

Bailey Byers' Bat Lifts Pioneers to Win on Final Day of Florida Trip

The Malone University softball team wrapped up their spring break trip with a 1-1 split on Friday. The Pioneers defeated Franklin Pierce University 7-3, but lost to Concordia College (NY) by a score of 11-4. Bailey Byers had a career day at the plate, slugging three homeruns and driving in seven.

Malone vs Franklin Pierce Recap:
Franklin Pierce started the scoring by putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Bailey Byers evened the score for the Pioneers in the top of the third with a 2-run cannon shot to left. April Howser hit a double up the middle on the next at bat and Kelsey Byers brought her in to score with an RBI single.

In the top of the fourth, Malone would extend the lead to 4-2 with an Erika Johnson double, followed up by a Madison Corrick RBI single. The Ravens got one back in the fifth after a hit by pitch and an RBI double.

Bailey Byers would blow the game open in the sixth with her second homerun of the day. After consecutive singles by Anissa Seese and Erika Johnson, Corrick completed a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over and Byers finished the job with a 3-run blast, making it 7-3 Pioneers.

Franklin Pierce would scratch across one more in the sixth, but it was not enough to climb out of the hole.

Bailey Byers finished the game going 2-for-4 with two longballs and five RBIs. Serena Tucciarelli batted 4-for-4, Erika Johnson finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a double, and April Howser went 2-for-3 with a double and a base on balls.

Kelsey Byers pitched a complete game and picked up the win, making her 5-1 on the season. She totaled eight strikeouts, allowed eight hits, three walks and four earned runs.

Malone vs Concordia Recap:
The Pioneer offense picked up where it left off in game one early in game two. Madison Corrick led off the bottom of the first with a double down the left field line and Bailey Byers walloped her third ball over the outfield fence on the day to give Malone a 2-0 lead.

However, that lead would not last for long as Concordia put up a crooked number in the third. The Clippers would draw four walks in the inning and convert four hits into six total runs. With a 6-2 lead, Concordia did not look back from there.

An Anissa Seese sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third would be matched by Concordia in the fifth on a throwing error allowing a run to score, making it 7-3 Clippers. Concordia added three more insurance runs in the sixth off of an error, single and sacrifice fly.

Madison Corrick would hit an RBI double in the sixth, scoring Caley Ritts from second, to make it 10-4 and Concordia struck once more in the top of the seventh with an RBI double of their own.

Morgan Sampsel received the loss after pitching 2 2/3 innings and surrendering five earned runs. Her record on the season is 1-1 in the circle.

Up Next:
The Pioneers return to Canton, Ohio for their home opener on Friday, March 15 against Lake Erie College. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
