Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Malone and Tiffin Split Goals in Senior Day Draw

Malone and Tiffin Split Goals in Senior Day Draw

The Malone University women's soccer team recorded a Senior Day draw on Saturday afternoon versus Tiffin University by a score of 1-1. It is the first draw of the season for the Pioneer women and they now have an overall record of 7-6-1, 4-6-1 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Dragons move to 1-13-2 on the year and 1-9-2 in conference.

Malone will hold on to the eight seed in the conference heading into the final game of the season on Tuesday. A win against rival Walsh would clinch post-season berth for the Pioneers.

Prior to the start of the match, Pioneer seniors Riley Nicholson, Lindsey Soltisz, Kirsten Hilty, Megan Fuller, Jeanette Soricelli, and Haleigh Seman were honored in a Senior Day celebration.

Malone took the first five shots of the game, including a penalty kick that was saved by the Dragon keeper Molly Miller.

In the 30th minute, Tiffin scored a goal off the foot of Sierra Besecker. Besecker deked her defender and put a shot up just inside the right post to take a 1-0 lead. Lauryn Grcic recorded an assist on the play.

The Pioneers stayed on the attack, but could not get the equalizer in the first half.

Tiffin was limited to only four shots in regulation time, however held the 1-0 lead for 58 minutes in the contest.

Playing with a sense of urgency as the clock was winding down, Kirsten Hilty drew a foul inside the box to give Malone a penalty kick with only a minute and change left to play. The leading scorer for the Pioneers, Danielle Lung, stepped up to the plate and redeemed her earlier miss to tie the game up at one. The goal would be her 12th of the season.

The first overtime saw only two errant shots by the Dragons. In the second 10-minute overtime period, the Pioneers rattled off five shots but could not seal the outright victory and had good looks at the net, including a long-distance strike from senior Riley Nicholson, a pair of blocked shots in the 6-yard box from Lung, and a late opportunity in the final minute from Keeley Malley.

In the game, Malone outshot Tiffin 25-6. Lung led all shot takers with 11 in the game, the first time she has hit double-digit shots in a game for her career.

Nicholson had four shots in the game, three of them on-goal. Malley and Hilty followed her with three shots apiece. Alexa Langenfeld added two shots and Natalie Martorana and Peyton Beech added one shot each.

The backline of Martorana, senior Lindsey Soltisz, Brooke Lindenschmidt, Andrea Fink and senior Megan Fuller did a great job of clearing balls and keeping the ball on the offensive side for 67% of Pioneer possessions.

Tuesday, November 5th is the regular season finale for Malone as the Pioneers travel to Walsh for a 5 pm match.
