Pioneer Women Clinch Postseason Berth, Fall to Walsh in Final Regular Season Game

The Malone University women's soccer team dropped their final match of the regular season to Walsh University 3-0. The Pioneers clinched a berth to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament with a loss by Lake Erie 3-2 to Ursuline and will be the number eight seed.

Malone finishes the regular season with a record of 7-7-1 overall, 4-7-1 in the G-MAC. Walsh heads into the conference tournament with a record of 13-4-0, 10-2-0 in conference matches.

To start the game, Walsh stormed down the field and scored in the 3rd minute of the match. Olivia Peters netted her eighth goal of the season after a Pioneer turnover in the defensive zone.

The Cavaliers continued to put pressure on the Pioneer defense, but the backline held strong and did not allow another goal in the first half.

Danielle Lung and Keeley Malley took shots for Malone late in the half, but defense reigned supreme for Walsh in the first half.

The second half was gritty both directions and there was little opportunity to score from in close. Walsh had a chance on an outlet pass, but keeper Jessica Morgan was able to escape trouble and clear the ball in the 55th minute.

Peters converted again in the 83rd minute to give the Cavaliers some breathing room and a 2-0 lead.

Maggie Kortis added on in the 87th minute to seal the Cavalier victory 3-0.

Danielle Lung and Payton Beech tied for the team lead in shots with two each.

Defenders Brooke Lindenschmidt and Andrea Fink played all 90 minutes on the pitch and Natalie Martorana and Addisyn Lewis played significant minutes in the back four.

Haleigh Seman started the game as the goalkeeper and recorded four saves. Jessica Morgan played the entire second half and grabbed one save.

The Pioneers will travel to Findlay to face the top-ranked Oilers in the first round of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament this Saturday, November 9.
