Pioneers to Continue Conference Play with Two Home Matches

Junior middle hitter Hannah Eliason leads the G-MAC in blocks per set.

The Malone University volleyball team returns home this weekend for a pair of Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchups against two Eastern Division foes. Malone will host Alderson Broaddus University on Friday, September 14th at 7:00 pm before welcoming Davis & Elkins College on Saturday, September 15th for a 1:00 pm match. The Pioneers went a combined 4-0 against the two teams in 2017.

Malone Notes 
  • The Pioneers come into the weekend with a 5-6 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the G-MAC following a Tuesday night loss to Tiffin.
  • Malone remains on top in the G-MAC in both digs (19.61) and blocks (2.21) per set. Nationally, the Pioneers are 13th in digs and 29th in blocks.
  • Libero Maggie Hamrock ranks 4th in the G-MAC in digs (5.08/set). Outside hitter Faith Lau (3.11 d/s), setter Cathryn Miller (2.48 d/s), and defensive specialists Sydney Black (2.74 d/s) and Abby Hasebein (2.33 d/s) have all made significant contributions in the back row.
  • At the net, junior middle hitter Hannah Eliason leads the conference in blocks per set (1.16) while hitting .276 and averaging 2.53 kills per set. Senior middle hitter Mallory Adams leads the team in kills (3.13/s) and hitting percentage (.307) and is second on the team in blocks (0.92 b/s).
  • In the four wins over Alderson Broaddus and Davis & Elkins last season, outside hitter Veronica Gehring hit a team-high .339 while averaging 2.88 kills per set. As a team, Malone posted a .257 attacking percentage, including a season-best .372 mark against D&E in a November sweep.
  • The Pioneers are a combined 7-1 over Alderson Broaddus and Davis & Elkins since joining the G-MAC in 2016.

  • The Battlers enter the week with a 6-6 overall mark and a 2-3 record in conference. In their most recent match on Tuesday, Alderson Broaddus defeated Ohio Valley in four sets.
  • Outside hitter Ashlyn McDonald tallied a match-high 14 kills in the win. On the season, she leads the team and is 7th in the G-MAC with 3.18 kills per set.
  • As a team, AB is third in the G-MAC in service aces. Libero Anna Schmidt is second in the country with 30 aces through 41 sets this season

  • Libero Kelly Smith is 7th in the league in digs with 4.46 per set. As a team, Davis & Elkins leads the G-MAC in opponents hitting percentage (.136) and ranks second in blocks behind Malone with 2.14 per set.
