Baseball Begins Homestand with Three Non-Conference Contests

Damian Maglione enters the week on a five-game hitting streak.

**Tuesday's (April 24th) originally scheduled doubleheader against Wheeling Jesuit has been moved to Thursday, April 26th due to forecasted rain.**

The Malone University baseball team is slated to begin a six-game homestand this week with a single nine-inning game against Tiffin University on Wednesday, April 25th at 1:00 pm followed by a doubleheader against Wheeling Jesuit on April 26th at 11:00 am. All three non-conference games will be played at Jackson High School in Massillon.

Series History
Malone won both ends of a doubleheader against Wheeling Jesuit last year in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Against Tiffin, the Pioneers are 54-33 all-time, including a marathon 17-14 victory over the Dragons earlier this month.

Malone Notes - Roster | Schedule | Stats
  • Pioneer catcher Matt Noel collected a team-high four hits in the two games against Wheeling Jesuit last season. Noel is batting a team-high .333 with a .462 OBP in home games this season.
  • Overall, Turner Hill leads the team in average (.339) and OBP (.460). He went 5-for-11 (.455) in the three games at Walsh last weekend.
  • In the win at Tiffin, 11 different Pioneers collected at least one hit, including three hits apiece from Todd Ropp, Austin White, and Andy Fletcher. Ropp is hitting a team-high .393 in non-conference games this season while White and Fletcher are hitting .350 and .341 respectively.
  • Shortstop Joe Crank is hitting .362 against non-conference pitching. Crank has reached base safely in 11 of the last 12 games, scoring 10 runs during that span.
  • Centerfielder Nate Cobb, who has reached base in 37 of 38 games this season, owns a .430 OBP and has scored a team-high 36 runs. Cobb is also second in the Midwest Region with 26 stolen bases.
  • Second baseman Zach Mottice carries a .435 OBP, second-best on the team, and has stolen 14 bases. He doubled twice during a three-hit game at Walsh last Friday.
  • Third baseman Damian Maglione had doubled three times during a modest five-game hit streak. He has five RBI during the stretch.
  • The Pioneers used seven different pitchers in the win at Tiffin and the bullpen should see plenty of action again this week. Senior reliever Jordan Yoder has appeared in six of the last eight games, striking out 11 in 10.1 innings.
  • Malone enters the week 10-4 at home, 11-7 in non-conference, and 16-12 against Midwest Region opponents. The first official NCAA Regional rankings will be released this week.
     
Wheeling Jesuit Notes - Roster | Schedule | Stats
  • WJU enters the week having lost 12 straight and 17 of its last 18. The Cardinals, who were held scoreless by the Pioneers twice last season, have been shut out seven times in 2018 and have scored two or fewer runs in 19 of 32 games.
  • Ohio native Tristan Grimes leads the team with a .283 batting average and 17 runs scored.

  • The Dragons, who are scheduled to join the G-MAC next season, have lost four of their last five and 13 of their last 17 games overall. They did, however, score a season-high 14 runs in the loss to Malone two weeks ago.
  • John Heckman (.343, 4 HR, 26 RBI) and Andrew McCurry (.325, 1 HR, 31 RBI) combined for six hits against the Pioneers. Heckman homered and drove in six runs.
