The Malone University's men's soccer traveled south to Kentucky Wesleyan College on Thursday evening and topped the Panthers by a final score of 3-2.
Malone took to an early lead as
Sam Condon scored in the 4th minute unassisted to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Condon's team-leading third of the season.Â
Condon was not finished when in the 16th minute he fed
Patrick Alvarez for another score to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. The goal was the second of the year for Alvarez.Â
Kentucky Wesleyan refused to go away quietly as they exploded for two quick goals near the start of the second half. The Panthers got a tally from Julian Gonzalez in the 50th minute followed by another one from Ben Protheroe in the 56th minute.
The Pioneer defense withstood the barrage and managed to clamp down the rest of the way. Malone regained the lead for good in the 66th minute as
Stephen Radonjich scored his second goal of the season with the assist from
Austin Coldsnow.
Malone climb to 4-7-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the conference with the win while Kentucky Wesleyan dropped to 1-9-1 and 0-7-1 in G-MAC competition.
Pioneer goalkeeper
Alexandre Durand was busy, securing seven saves. Statistically speaking, the Panthers edged out the Pioneers 18-15 in total shots, but not in the most important statistic - the final score.
With the win, Malone is still alive in the playoff hunt while the Pioneers dealt a blow to the Panthers' postseason hopes.
