The Malone University baseball team fell to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) power Seton Hill University Tuesday afternoon on the road. The Pioneers squandered an early 3-0 lead before losing by a 9-4 final tally. With the loss, Malone dropped to 9-5 on the season.
Recap
Malone took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back two-out extra-base hits from Brenden Wells and Keanan Locke. After doubling to centerfield, Wells came in to score on an RBI triple from Locke.
Locke struck again two innings later with a two-run bomb to left center that gave Malone a 3-0 lead. Seton Hill trimmed the deficit to 3-1 with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the inning.
The two teams traded zeros until the bottom of the fifth when the Griffins tacked on an unearned run to make it 3-2. Seton Hill then took the lead with three runs in the sixth. An RBI double, an RBI triple, and a safety squeeze play made it a 5-3 ball game.
Malone made it 5-4 in the top of the seventh as Wells delivered a run-scoring single, but the Griffins put up four runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach.
The Pioneers loaded the bases in both the eighth and ninth innings but failed to push a run across. Malone out-hit Seton Hill 12-9, but the Pioneers stranded 10 runners on base throughout the contest. Keanan Locke led the offense with three hits and three RBI while Wells added two hits and two runs scored. Joe Crank and Michael Mathieu each recorded two hits apiece.
In a staff day for Malone, Roscoe Blackburn (2.1 IP), Christian Specht (1.1 IP), and Kyle Kovach each threw scoreless outings. Jordan Yoder (2-1) was charged with the loss.
