Seton Hill Tops Malone in Non-Conference Clash

The Malone University baseball team suffered a 19-9 defeat to visiting Seton Hill University (PA) Wednesday afternoon at Jackson High School. With the loss, the Pioneers dropped to 12-11 on the season.

Game Recap:
Taking advantage of the short fences and gusting winds, the Griffins took an early two-run lead in the top of the first inning on the first of their nine homeruns

The Pioneers took their own two-run lead with four runs in the bottom half. Jon Crank's RBI double tied the ball game at 2-2 before run-producing hits from Matt Davis and Derek Carmichael made it 4-2.

A two-out solo homer from Senior Richie Mast lifted the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the second. Mast's long ball marked his first of the season and the second of his career.

The Griffins would hit three homeruns in the top of the third. A grand slam from Mark Calacane put Seton Hill up 6-5 before two more long balls made it 8-5. The two teams traded runs in the fourth before Seton Hill added three more runs in the fifth and another in the seventh to go up 13-6.

Austin Pachan's double off the base of the wall the bottom of the seventh drove in two and cut the deficit to 13-8 but three runs for the Griffins in the eighth made it 16-8.

Jon Crank would score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth but a three-run shot from Melacane in the top of the ninth left no doubt as the Griffins rolled to the 19-9 final. Melacane finished with three homers and eight runs driven in.

Derek Carmichael recorded a team-high three hits for the Pioneers while Mast, Crank, and Keanan Locke all added two apiece. Reserve outfielder Dyllan West picked up his first career hit with a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth.

Up Next:
The Pioneers will travel to Columbus this weekend to play a pair of conference doubleheaders with Ohio Dominican.
