Day One StoryThe Malone University men's swimming & diving team finished in eighth place, among eight teams at the GLIAC Championships on Saturday, while the women's squad placed ninth among a 10-team field.
On the final day of competition at the Waterford Motts High School in Waterford, Michigan (hosted by Wayne State University), Grand Valley State University's (MI) men's team took the championship title with 840 points while the Pioneers tallied 253 points for their eighth-place finish.
Wayne State University's (MI) women's team captured the championship title with 840.5 points while the Malone women collected 126 points for their ninth-place finish.
For the men's team,
Chris Eckard placed fourth in the 100 yard freestyle prelims (45.71) and recorded an NCAA Division II National Championship "B cut" time, while
Hector Gonzalez and
Florian Zellin tallied 14
th (47.38) and 15
th (47.44) place finishes in the prelims. In the Championship Finals, Eckard registered a seventh-place spot (46.26), while Gonzalez and Zellin finished 14
th (47.40) and 15
th (47.43), respectively in the Consolation Final.
Tim Collet collected a fifth-place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke Championship Final, with a 2:00.21 time which was a NCAA Division II National Championship "B cut" time.
Cory Boogaart, Zellin, Gonzalez, and Eckard placed runner-up in the 400 yard freestyle relay, finishing with a 3:05.22 time. They now hold the second fastest time in Malone history in this event. Â
For the women's team,
Marta Jankowska took 10
th place and shattered the school record, again, in the 1650 yard freestyle, finishing with a 17:44.86 time. She broke the school record last season at the GLIAC Championships with a 17:48.81 time. Â Â
Brittany McCue didn't qualify for the finals, but she smashed the school record, again, in the 200 yard backstroke (2:16.71). She broke the school record earlier this season at the College of Wooster Invite (2:17.26).
Olivia Bently,
Carolin Friedrich, McCue, and Jankowska notched a ninth-place finish (3:44.71) in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Their time is now the fourth fastest in Malone history.
Over the course of the four days, the Pioneers gathered eight NCAA Division II National Championship "B cut" times:
