Results The Malone University men's and women's swimming & diving teams returned to competition for the first time since Decmeber and swept Urbana University, but fell to Ashland University in their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) meet. The double-dual meet was hosted by Ashland in Ashland, Ohio.
The men's team cruised by Urbana 168-71, while the women's team defeated Urbana 152-96. Both the men's and women's teams fell to Ashland, by the final scores of 152-110 and 148-98, respectively.
For the men, Christopher Eckard captured first place in the 200 yard freestyle, with a winning time of 1:47.03, while
Cory Boogaart notched a second-place finish with a 1:47.96 time.
Tim Collet tallied an impressive three first-place victories on the day. The first victory was in the 50 yard breaststroke, with a winning time of 27.39. Collet now holds the third fastest time in that event at Malone. His second win on the day was in the 100 yard breaststroke (59.24), while his third victory on the day was in the 200 yard individual medley (1:58.87).
Florian Zellin collected a first-place spot in the 100 yard butterfly, finishing with a 52.25 mark. He also notched a top spot in the 100 yard freestyle (48.36).
Boogaart tallied a first-place victory in the 50 yard freestyle, with a winning time of 22.43. He then later collected third-place in the 100 yard backstroke (55.87).
Evan Dickes took runner-up in the 50 yard butterfly, finishing with a 25.83 time.
Hector Gonzalez, Boogaart, Eckard, and Zellin captured first-place in the 200 yard freestyle relay, with a winning time of 1:28.78.
On the women's team,
Marta Jankowska captured first-place in the 100 yard butterfly, with a winning time of 1:00.20. In addition, she was runner-up in the 200 yard individual medley (2:15.15).
Carolin Friedrich took runner-up in the 1650 yard freestyle, finishing with a 18:39.58 time. She now holds the fifth fastest time in that event at Malone. Friedrich then place third in the 100 yard freestyle (1:00.25).
Olivia Bently registered a second-place finish in the 50 yard breaststroke (32.83), which is now the second fastest time in Malone history.
Victoria Baker took third place in the event, finishing with a 38.13 time. Baker now holds the fourth fastest time at Malone.
Bently and Jankowska took second and third place in the 100 yard breaststroke, finishing with a 1:11.16 and 1:14.46 mark respectively.
In the 100 yard backstroke,
Brittany McCue and
Sarah Mally collected a second and third place finish, tallying a 1:06.02 and 1:15.64 time respectively.
In the 500 yard freestyle, Friedrich notched a second-place finish (5:35.82), while
Kaylor Schuttinger took third (5:42.04).
Christina Yu registered third-place in the 50 yard butterfly, finishing with a 29.79 time.
In the 200 yard freestyle, the relay "A" team of Bently, Schuttinger, McCue, and Friedrich finished in second place with a 1:48.07 mark, while the freestyle relay "B" team of Mally, Yu, Baker, and
Cindy Jewel tallied the third spot with a 1:56.98 mark.Â
Comment from Coach Hunt on today's double-dual meet:
"Today's meet really was the culmination of our two-week winter training camp," said Malone head coach
Russ Hunt. "This meet was a nice showcase, but the real work was done in Canton, and in Cleveland with Cleveland State through each training session over the course of camp. All that said, it was really nice to be back competing, and we relish the opportunities ahead."
The Malone teams will next compete in a meet at Baldwin Wallace University, a competition that also includes Bethany College (WV), next Saturday, January 16
th at 1:00 p.m.
