The Malone University volleyball team dropped to 4-8 on the year and 0-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) after losing in three sets 26-28, 14-25, 22-25 to visiting Grand Valley State (MI) University on Friday night.
The Pioneers were hot early on as they rolled to a 12-3 advantage in the first set before the Lakers starting slowly chipping away at the lead. Malone had a set point opportunity at 26-25 but Grand Valley rallied for the final three points and a dramatic first-set victory. The Lakers went on to win the final two sets to secure their 3rd GLIAC win of the season.
Mallory Adams finished the night with a team-leading 7 kills. Haley Kool and Sarah Brent each added 6 kills of their own. Jordan Cloyd served up 4 service aces, including three in a row in the third set. The defense was led by Lynsey Trusty and Maggie Hamrock who added 12 and 10 digs respectively. Elizabeth Maczuzak continued her strong senior-year campaign finishing the night with 5 kills, 9 digs, and a career-high 9 blocks.
Grand Valley State freshman Staci Brewer, the GLIAC's 3rd best hitter in terms of kills per set, ended the match with 18 kills.
The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, September 26th at 1:00 pm when they square off against NCAA DII #2 Ferris State before meeting NCAA DII #10 Wheeling Jesuit at 6:00 pm.
