Day One StoryÂ
At the NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Friday, in Allendale, Michigan, the final two Malone University national qualifiers competed as
Duke Taylor took part in the shot put while
Lepear Smith competed in the 110-meter hurdle prelims.
Â
In the national meet hosted by Grand Valley State University (MI), Taylor was among 18 athletes to compete in the discus throw. After narrowly missing out on All-America honors at last year's national discus competition, with a ninth-place national finish (one spot from All-American), Taylor got off three excellent throws but fouled on each attempt and was unable to achieve the All-America goal this season.
Â
Smith then competed in the 110-meter hurdle prelims and finished in 13th place, among an 18-man field, with a time of 14.23 seconds. Although Smith was not able to move on to Saturday's finals, his time was a new personal best and one that is still second on the school's all-time performer list, behind school-record holder Brian Finney (14.14, 2002).
Â
The five Malone national qualifiers have now completed their competition at the national meet, which concluded tomorrow (Saturday). Â
