At the NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Thursday, in Allendale, Michigan, three of the five Malone University student-athletes who qualified for national competition competed on the first day of events.

In the national meet hosted by Grand Valley State University (MI),
Mattison Rankin was the first Pioneer athlete to take part in an event as she competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase preliminaries. Among a 20-woman field, Rankin placed 18th with a time of 11:04.86 but did not qualify for the finals.

In the women's 10,000 meters, among 21 entrants,
Sara Polatas finished 14th in a time of 35:43.47. Her time was just off her school-record mark of 35:20.76 that she set at the Mt. SAC Relays earlier this season.

In the final event of the evening,
Andrew Trusty competed in the men's 10,000 meters among a field of 19 competitors and finished in 13th place in a time of 30:36.85.

Two other Pioneer student-athletes will compete in tomorrow's competition.Â
Duke Taylor will compete in the discus while
Lepear Smith will take part in the 110-meter hurdles prelims.
