The Malone University men's track & field team finished sixth and the women's team took seventh at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships in Hillsdale, Michigan Friday after three days of competition.

Among a 14-team men's field, Malone tallied 40 points for its sixth-place finish while, among a 16-team women's field, the Pioneers finished with 55 points for their seventh-place finish. Grand Valley State University (MI) won both the men's team title (159 points) and women's team championship (157 points).

In today's competition, one Malone school record was broken and five NCAA Div. II national provisional qualifying times were posted.
For the women, in the finals of the 800 meters,
Erika Rector broke her own school record of 2:12.59 with a runner-up time of 2:11.82 in today's race, a mark that is an NCAA Div. II national provisional qualifying time.

In the finals of the 100-meter dash,
Karli Oprian and
Crystal Barber finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in times of 12.18 and 12.28 seconds. Although each time was just off a personal best for the duo, only one other athlete in the history of the Malone women's track & field team (Tracie Stevenson, 1987) has ever run as fast as today's times. Stevenson and Oprian hold the school record at 12.14 each while Barber is just behind at 12.17.

In the finals of the 200-meter dash, Barber posted a new personal-best time of 24.90 seconds to finish seventh in the race. Her time was just .03 seconds off the school record (E. Fisher, 2014).

In the 5000 meters,
Hannah Campbell smashed her own personal-best mark with a time of 17:01.77, fourth place among 34 runners in today's race, to move up from #6 to #2 on Malone's all-time performer list for the event. In addition,
Sara Polatas finished just behind Campbell in fifth place in a new personal-best time of 17:09.19, which moved her up a spot, from #5 to #4, on the school's all-time list. Both of today's times were NCAA Div. II national provisional times.

Hannah Boss finished fifth in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:03.51 while
Emily Fisher placed seventh in 1:04.25.

In the finals of the 1500 meters,
Mackenzie Keller placed 10th in a time of 4:41.48.
Samantha Soeder finished 14th in the discus, among 30 throwers, with a personal-best mark of 127' 7".

In the final women's event of the meet, Malone's 4x400-meter relay unit of Boss,
Taryn Chapman, Rector and Fisher took fourth among 13 teams in a time of 3:53.26, a time that was just over one second off the school record and the third-best time in school history.
For the men,
Duke Taylor posted a new personal best in the discus with an impressive toss of 176' 6", which moved him up one spot, to #2, on Malone's all-time performer list for the event. He finished fourth among 33 entrants and his mark was a very strong NCAA Div. II national provisional qualifying mark.

In the 5000-meter event,
Andrew Trusty placed second, among 27 runners, in a time of 14:43.50 while
Gage Black took ninth in 15:07.67.

Lepear Smith posted an impressive third-place finish in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.33 seconds, which was an NCAA Div. II national provisional time.

In the pole vault,
Ethan Nichols placed seventh at 14' 9" while
Mark Butler grabbed a 10th-place finish at 14' 3.25".

In the finals of the 400-meter hurdles,
Matt Shoup came in eighth in a time of 1:01.10.

Deondre Martin placed 11th in the finals of the 1500 meters in a time of 4:05.55.

The Malone teams will next compete at the Allegheny College (PA) Gator Invitational on May 8th before several Pioneer student-athletes will be competing in the NCAA Div. II National Championships May 21-23 in Allendale, Michigan (hosted by Grand Valley State University).
