ResultsThe Malone University women's outdoor track & field team captured first place and the men's squad took second at the Westminster College (PA) Invitational on Saturday. In addition, the Pioneers also posted a win in the combined scoring.

Among 22 women's teams scoring points, the Pioneers tallied 108 points to easily outdistance runner-up Grove City College (PA), which had 88 points. Walsh University placed third with 79 points.

Among 20 men's teams scoring points, Malone racked up 110 points for its second-place finish as Penn State-Behrend College edged the Pioneers by just 2.5 points, with 112.5, to take the title. Grove City was third with 80 points.

In combined scoring, Malone easily won the title, among 24 teams scoring, with 218 points to defeat runner-up Grove City, which had 168 points, by 50 points. Walsh placed third with 144.5 points.

Nine total individual first-place finishes were posted by Pioneer student-athletes on the day with five tallied by the women's team and four by the men's.

For the women,
Crystal Barber took first among 43 entrants in the 100 meters (12.24) and also captured the win in the 200 meters (25.43) among 58 sprinters in that field. Also in those races,
Emily Fisher placed fourth in the 100 in a personal-best time of 12.57 seconds while
Taryn Chapman took fourth in the 200 in a PR time of 26.25.

With an impressive PR in the hammer throw,
Lyndsey Bates captured a victory in the event, among 17 throwers, with a toss of 168' 2.5", a mark that is just off the school record of 171' 1" (D. Henderson, 2003) and one that solidifies her #2 spot on the school's all-time top-ten list for the event. Â In addition, this throw was an NCAA Div. II national provisional qualifying mark.

Fisher would go on to pocket a victory in the 400-meter hurdles, among 20 competitors, in a time of 1:03.93 while
Hannah Boss finished second in the event in 1:04.79.

Among 53 runners in the 800 meters,
Erika Rector snagged a first-place finish in a time of 2:16.33 with
Mackenzie Keller taking third in the event in 2:18.82.

Morgan Kelly posted a PR in the pole vault, among 29 vaulters, with an impressive fourth-place height of 11' 2", which moves her into the #2 spot on Malone's all-time list.
Maggie Pikna also notched a PR at 10'2" to finish ninth and move into the #6 slot on the school's all-time list.

Kelly would also finish fourth in the high jump event, among 30 jumpers, with a leap of 4' 11".

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Barber,
Emily Luli,
Emily O'Dell and Chapman took the runner-up spot in the event, among 11 teams in the field, in a time of 4:04.36.

Boss took third in the 100-meter hurdles, among 31 contestants, in 15.07 seconds while
Corrina Ruffener placed sixth in 15.79.

In addition, other top-ten finishes for the women on the day included
Samantha Soeder in the discus, among 44 throwers, in 121' 7.5" (4th), Luli in the 400 meters, among 37 entrants, in 1:01.88 (7th), Ruffener in the long jump, among 41 jumpers, at 15' 4" (9th), and Chapman in the javelin, among 48 throwers, in 90' 9.75" (10th).

For the men's squad, the Pioneers posted an impressive 1-2-3-4 finish in the 5000 meters and also had two of its other three runners crack the top ten in the 45-man race.
Ryan Roush took first in 14:53.56,
Andrew Trusty finished second in 14:54.50,
Luis Carbajal placed third in 15:31.89 and
Nate Boyer grabbed fourth in 15:20.57. In addition,
Alex Adams finished ninth in 15:48.99 and
Spencer Ziegler finished 10th in 15:56.25.

Matt Hendrix captured first place in the 800 meters, among 62 entrants, in a time of 1:55.17.

In the 1500 meters, among 44 runners,
Lorne Strausbaugh finished first with a time of 4:11.50.

Duke Taylor tallied a win in the discus, among 50 throwers, with a toss of 164' 11.5", an NCAA Div. II provisional mark, while
Michael Irwin finished fifth with a throw of 139' 3.5".

Irwin would also post a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw, among 17 competitors, with a huge PR effort of 148' 10" while
Chad Sanner took ninth in a PR of 121' 10".

Irwin then racked up a fourth-place finish in the javelin, among 52 competitors, with a throw of 168' 0".

Lepear Smith took second in the 110-meter hurdles, among 20 hurdlers, in 14.80 seconds while
Cameron Mack was sixth in a PR time of 16.07 seconds.

Matt Shoup tallied a second-place finish in the 26-man 400-meter hurdles in 55.49 seconds.

In the 4x400-meter relay, among 15 teams, the unit of
Thomas Elton,
Eric Barto,
Marc Megenhardt and Shoup took third in a season-best time of 3:24.36.

Mark Butler finished third in the pole vault, among 31 vaulters, with a PR effort of 14' 3.25".

Other top-ten finishes for Malone included
Temeko Holness in the 100 meters, among 42 sprinters, in a PR time of 11.16 seconds (6th),
Tim Makowski in the shot put, among 44 throwers, at 44' 9.5" (6th), and
Dan Price in the 3000-meter steeplechase, among 21 entrants, in 10:40.05 (9th).

The Malone teams will next compete in the Walsh University Invitational this Friday and Saturday (April 17-18). The Pioneers will also send several student-athletes to the Mount SAC Relays, hosted by Mt. San Antonio College (Walnut, CA), on Thursday (April 16).
