Day One Story - Raleigh RelaysÂ
Malone University men's and women's outdoor track & field team members competed at both the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University, and at the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open, hosted by Cedarville University, on Saturday.

On the second and final day of the Raleigh Relays, the highlight of the day for Malone was the breaking of a 28-year-old school record by the women's 4x200-meter relay team of
Karli Oprian,
Hannah Boss,
Crystal Barber and
Emily Fisher who posted a new school record in the event with a time of 1:44.86 (19th among 27 teams). Their time broke the longstanding Malone record of 1:45.70 set in 1987 (T. Smith, S. Hogan, K. Geiser, T. Stevenson).

Fisher earned a 12th-place finish, among 61 entrants, in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.10. The mark was shy of her own school record (59.72 in 2014) but was still one that only two Malone women have ever bettered (Boss, 2014; Kate Arthur, 2001). In that same race, Boss finished 26th in 1:05.52.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Boss,
Taryn Chapman,
Erika Rector and Fisher finished 19th, among a 32-team field, in a time of 4:01.37.

Matt Shoup was the only men's team member to compete for the Pioneers at the Raleigh Relays on Saturday and paced Malone in the 400-meter hurdles by placing 31st, among 59 entrants, with a time of 56.68 seconds.

Late Friday night at the Relays,
Andrew Trusty paced Malone in the 10,000 meters by finishing 20th among 65 runners in a time of 29:52.40.

At the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open, the Malone men's team finished sixth, among 13 teams scoring, with 56 points as Ohio Northern University won the men's team title with 187 points.  The Pioneer women's squad finished sixth, among 13 teams scoring, with 52 points as Cedarville won the women's title with 154 points.

In men's competition,
Duke Taylor captured the discus event, among 26 competitors with a toss of 163' 0". Â Among 27 entrants in the hammer throw, Taylor placed fourth with a toss of 154' 9".

Tim Makowski grabbed a runner-up finish in the shot put, among 25 throwers, with a toss of 46' 2".
Â
Lavell Morgan earned a tie for first place, among 15 jumpers, as he cleared the bar at 6' 4.25".

Among a dozen vaulters in the pole vault event, Malone posted a 2-3 finish as
Logan Studer took the runner-up spot at 14' 0" while
Mark Butler grabbed third place with the same height.

Cameron Mack placed eighth, among 36 sprinters, in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.46 seconds. Later in the 100-meter dash, Mack placed sixth, among 23 sprinters, with a time of 11.58 seconds.

Among 26 runners in the 5000 meters,
Spencer Ziegler took sixth in a time of 16.06.07.

In the women's meet,
Lyndsey Bates won the hammer throw among 22 throwers in the event with a toss of 149' 7".

Among 22 entrants in the discus,
Samantha Soeder finished fourth with a throw of 117' 1".

Morgan Kelly placed fourth in the pole vault, among 15 vaulters, with a height of 10' 6", which tied her personal best, while
Maggie Pikna finished in a tie for seventh at 9' 6.25".

Kelly later went on to win the high jump, among a 10-woman field, with a personal-best height of 5' 2.25" while
Christina McCarthy finished in a tie for sixth at 4' 6.25".

In the long jump, Malone had two top-ten efforts in the event as
Tayler Carpenter finished in a tie for fifth at 15' 11" while
Corrina Ruffener was 10th at 15' 2".

Among 17 entrants in the 100-meter hurdles, two Pioneers cracked the top ten as Ruffener finished seventh in 16.85 seconds while
Kelsey Veldhuizen took eighth in 17.33. Ruffener also grabbed an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:14.68.

Rachel Koons took sixth, among 37 competitors, in the 1500 meters in a time of 4:56.99.
Â
Veldhuizen took 10th in the javelin with a toss of 74' 10", among 22 competitors in the event.

In the 3000 meters,
Erin Moomaw finished eighth among 11 entrants with a time of 11:30.27.

Among 24 runners in the 5000 meters,
Laura Tweedie finished seventh in a time of 18:54.32.

The Malone men's and women's teams will next compete at the John Homon Invitational, hosted by the University of Mount Union, April 3-4.
