The Malone University men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed at the Kent State University Tune Up meet on Saturday as two Pioneer school records were broken in the process.
For the men, among 36 hurdlers in the 60-meter hurdles prelims,
Lepear Smith qualified for the finals with a seventh-place time of 8.23 seconds. Then, in the finals, Smith blazed to a new school-record time of 8.12 seconds (5th place of 8 in the race), which broke the previous record of 8.15 seconds set by
Johnnie Legrair in 2013.
For the women, in the final women's event of the day, the 4x400 relay team of
Hannah Boss,
Taryn Chapman,
Erika Rector and
Emily Fisher placed fifth among 19 teams in the competition with a time of 3:55.76. The mark was a new school record, breaking the previous record of 3:57.21 set by Boss,
Crystal Barber, Rector and Chapman earlier this season.
In other men's action, in the 10-man 1000-meter event,
Gage Black and
Nick Fresenko went 1-2, respectively, in the race as Black posted a winning time of 2:35.86 to move into Malone's top-ten performers list while Fresenko was right behind in 2:38.81.
Among 60 competitors in the 800 meters,
Matt Hendrix posted a fourth-place finish in a time of 1:55.43 while
Brandon Simmons was close behind in eighth place in a personal-best time of 1:56.48.
In the 54-man 3000 meters,
Ryan Roush placed fourth in 8:39.89 while
Luis Carbajal finished eighth in 8:42.61.
Ethan Nichols posted a seventh-place finish in the seeded pole vault event at a height of 14' 6.25". In the unseeded pole vault,
Mark Butler earned a third-place finish, among 23 vaulters, at 14' 6.25" while
Logan Studer tied for fourth place, matching Butler's (and Nichols') height with the same 14' 6.25" mark.
In the one-mile run,
Nate Boyer tallied a 17th-place time of 4:23.47, among a 61-man field.
Among a 60-man field in the 400 meters,
Matt Shoup led the Pioneer contingent with an 18th-place finish in a time of 50.89 seconds. Later, in the 200 meters, Shoup posted a personal-best time of 23.08 seconds.
Tim Makowski represented Malone in the shot put and collected a 13th-place finish with a toss of 48' 2.75".
For the women, among 26 sprinters in the 60-meter dash prelims, Barber earned a spot in the finals by finishing eighth in a time of 7.85 seconds. Then, in the finals, Barber flew to a personal-best time of 7.78 seconds (4th place of 7 in the race), which was just .04 seconds off the school mark set by
Karli Oprian in 2013 (7.74).
Among a massive 73 entrants in the 200 meters, Barber pace Malone with a ninth-place finish in a time of 25.41 seconds, which was only .03 seconds off her school-record time of 25.38 that she posted earlier this season. In addition, Fisher was next at 19th in a personal-best time of 26.35.
In the women's unseeded pole vault event,
Morgan Kelly cleared an impressive personal-best height of 11' 1" to finish fourth among 17 vaulters. In addition, the height moved her into the #2 position on Malone's all-time performer list.Â
Maggie Pikna finished ninth in the event with a personal-best mark of 10' 7", which kept her at the #4 spot on the Pioneer all-time list.
Among a 49-woman field in the weight throw event,
Lyndsey Bates represented Malone with a toss of 53' 3.75", which gave her an 11th-place finish.
Rector represented Malone in the 54-woman field of the 800 meters and posted a 10th-place finish with a personal-best time of 2:17.30.
In the 60-meter Qualifying prelims,
Corrina Ruffener paced three Malone athletes with an eighth-place finish, among 39 competitors, in a time of 9.47 seconds.
In the 60-meter hurdles prelims, Boss paced three Pioneer hurdlers with a 12th-place finish in a time of 9.14 seconds, which was just .05 seconds from the eighth and final qualifying spot for the finals.
In the high jump, Chapman led Malone with a 13th-place finish at 5'3".
Malone will next compete at the GLIAC Indoor Championships February 28th and March 1st in University Center, Michigan (hosted by Saginaw Valley State University).
