Volleyball Weathers the Storm

The Malone University volleyball team earned its 10th win of the season with a four-set triumph over the Storm of Lake Erie College 23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-20.

The Pioneers, despite beginning the game on a 5-0 run, struggled offensively early on, hitting just .116 in the opening set. Over the final three sets, however, the offensive attack was outstanding, landing 45 kills with just 6 errors on 104 attacks for a .375 attacking percentage. For the match, Malone finished with 58 kills (including 19 in the final set) and a.299 attacking percentage. The Pioneers' 58 kills were their most in a four-set match this season and just one shy of the season-high 59 kills the Pioneers tallied in a five-set match against Alderson Broaddus.

Senior Elizabeth Maczuzak was superb on the night, hitting a Malone individual season-high .542 while tying for the team-high with 14 kills. Classmate Sarah Brent was not to be outdone, tying a career-high and a team-high with 14 kills. Mallory Adams, Haley Kool, and Veronica Gehring finished with 10, 9, and 8 kills respectively. Cathryn Miller reached the 50-assist mark for the 2nd straight game, finishing with an even 50. Heather Papp added a game-high 3 service aces

Defensively, Maggie Hamrock set a career-high with 25 digs. Maczuzak recorded her 5th double-double of the season, collecting 12 digs and chipping in with 5 blocks. Miller added 8 digs and 4 blocks while Brent, Adams, and Kool contributed 2 blocks each.

For Lake Erie, Bethany Fisher (14) and Madison Russell (13) combined for 27 kills, while Leondra Barrett supplied 5 blocks.

The Pioneers, who improved to 10-17 on the year and 3-9 in the GLIAC, will travel to Ashland for a 2:00 pm match tomorrow (October 31st). Game notes for that match are available by clicking here.
