Results Day One Story The Malone University men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed on the second and final day of the Spire Midwest Open at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday. In all, one Pioneer men's and one women's NCAA Div. II national provisional qualifying mark were collected while two Malone women's school records were registered.
For the men's team,
Lepear Smith pocketed a slot in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.44 seconds in the prelims. Then, in the finals, he captured first place by clocking a time of 8.19 seconds, which was just .02 seconds off his personal-best time of 8.17 that he posted last weekend. In addition, the 8.19 was again an NCAA Div. II national provisional qualifying mark (his 8.17 set last week currently ranks 17th in the nation) and it was also a new Spire Institute record time.
In the 800 meters,
Matt Hendrix finished fourth among 46 competitors in a time of 1:56.11.
Scott Whitaker paced Malone in the one-mile run as he finished eighth, among 65 entrants, in a time of 4:21.00.
In the 3000 meters,
Ryan Roush placed third among 36 runners in a time of 8:37.96.
Among 35 throwers in the weight throw event,
Duke Taylor posted a toss of 54' 1" to place sixth while
Michael Irwin finished 10th in the event with a PR toss of 47' 7.75" which keeps him at sixth on Malone's all-time performer list.
In the pole vault, among 26 vaulters, all three Pioneer entrants cracked the top ten in the event as
Ethan Nichols led the way with a sixth-place (tied) finish at 14' 11".
Logan Studer and
Mark Butler tied for ninth at 14' 5.25" as Studer's mark was a personal best.
In the shot put, among 39 throwers,
Tim Makowski recorded a throw of 46' .50" to place 10th overall.
Among 20 jumpers in the high jump,
Lavell Morgan tied for fifth with a height of 6' 2.75".
In the final event of the day, the men's 4 x400 meter relay team of
Matt Shoup, Whitaker,
Brandon Simmons and Hendrix placed third among 15 units in the event in a time of 3:26.43.
For the women, Lindsey Bates emerged victorious among an impressive 50 throwers in the weight throw event with a toss of 55' 2.25". The mark was a national provisional qualifying mark and was just inches off her own school-record throw of 55' 11.25" set last season.
Among 63 entrants in the prelims of the 60-meter dash,
Crystal Barber blazed to a third-best time in 7.81 seconds, a personal-best for her (#2 on Malone's all-time performer list) to earn a spot in the finals. Then, in the finals, she recorded a fourth-place finish in 7.82 seconds.
Later, among 93 competitors in the 200 meters, Barber earned a fourth-place finish in a new school-record time of 25.38 seconds, a mark that smashed her own previous school record of 25.65 that she had just set last week.
Another school record that fell for the Malone women was in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of
Hannah Boss, Barber,
Erika Rector and
Taryn Chapman posted a school-record time of 3:57.21 to edge the old indoor school mark of 3:57.78 (2007). The unit finished second among 22 teams entered in the event.
Boss earned a spot in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.22 seconds in the prelims. The 9.22 time puts her at #3 on the Malone all-time performer list. Then, in the finals, she finished seventh in a time of 9.24 seconds.
Among 52 competitors in the one-mile run,
Mattison Rankin and Mackie Keller finished sixth and 10th, respectively, with times of 5:07.39 and 5:13.82. Rankin's time was a personal best for her and keeps her at #2 on Malone's all-time performer list for the event.
Hannah Campbell earned an eighth-place finish among 50 runners in the 3000 meters in a time of 10:05.18 which moved her into the #3 spot on Malone's all-time performer list for the event.
In the women's 600-meter event, the Pioneers went 6-7-8 in the event, among 28 participants, as Rector led the way in 1:41.57, breaking into the top ten on Malone's all-time performer list for the event at #6.
Emily Luli followed in 1:43.26 and
Emily O'Dell posted a 1:44.32.
In the pole vault event,
Maggie Pikna and
Morgan Kelly each cleared the bar at 10' 0". Pikna's mark was a personal best and placed her in a tie for fourth on Malone's all-time performer list. Kelly's height was just off her PR of 10" 4.25" (#3 on the school's all-time performer list).
Among a large 45-woman field in the long jump, the Pioneers'
Tayler Carpenter earned a 10th-place finish with a mark of 16' 8.50".
The Malone teams will next compete at the Hillsdale College (MI) Wide-Track Classic February 6-7.
