ResultsThe Malone University men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed at the non-team scoring Youngstown State University Invitational on Friday with numerous Pioneers posting all-time Malone top-ten performer marks including a new school record set in the women's 200 meters.
Â
In women's competition, although not qualifying for the finals,
Crystal Barber posted a ninth-place time of 7.88 in the prelims of the 60-meter dash, a mark that only one other Pioneer (
Karli Oprian) has ever bettered. Barber's previous time of 7.82 is second on this Malone event listing (to Oprian's 7.74 in 2013). In addition, Oprian's time of 7.99 in tonight's prelims was still a mark that only Barber, in Malone indoor history, has ever beaten.
Â
Later in the evening, in the top Malone highlight of the meet, Barber's seventh-place time of 25.65 seconds in the 200 meters became the fastest time ever run by a Malone women's indoor athlete in the event, eclipsing Oprian's time of 25.80 from 2013. Barber's previous personal best, that she had set very recently, was 25.94.
Â
Hannah Campbell captured the 5000-meter event, among 26 entrants with a time of 17:30.71, which moved her into an impressive fifth spot on Malone's all-time performers list for this event. Â In addition,
Sara Polatas took fifth in the race in a time of 18:21.71.
Â
Among 36 competitors in the weight throw,
Lyndsey Bates placed eighth with a toss of 51' 1.5".
Â
Although she didn't place in the top ten in her event on the night,
Morgan Kelly tallied a 10'00 leap in the pole vault, a height which only two other Malone indoor vaulters have ever surpassed (Kelly is currently third on Malone's all-time indoor list at 10' 4.25").
Madison Schuler and
Mattison Rankin finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the one-mile run in times of 5:09.03 and 5:09.54. Schuler edged her previous best-ever time of 5:10.41 (top three on Malone's all-time performer list) while Rankin's mark was just off her second-best all-time Malone mark of 5:08.66.
Â
Emily Fisher, who currently holds the second spot on Malone's all-time performer list in the 400 meters (at 58.24), took ninth place among 42 entrants in tonight's event in a time of 59.86 seconds. In addition,
Taryn Chapman finished 11th in 1:00.05, a time that places her sixth on Malone's all-time list.
Â
Erika Rector placed third, among 41 entrants, in the 800 meters in a time of 2:19.63, a mark that now places her eighth on the Pioneers' all-time performer listing.
Â
In the final women's event of the night, the Pioneer 4x400 relay unit of
Hannah Boss, Barber, Rector and Fisher posted a fifth-place time of 4:01.95 among a field of 14 teams.
Â
For the men,
Duke Taylor took fifth in the weight throw, among 32 competitors, with an outstanding throw of 55' 5.75" (only one other Malone athlete, other than Taylor himself, has ever throw farther than that mark – Ray Weisenbarger at 55' 6.5"; Taylor holds the all-time Malone best mark at 59' 7.5").
Â
After posting a fourth-place finish in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles in 8.43 seconds,
Lepear Smith went on to place second in the finals in a time of 8.17 seconds. Smith continues to hold the second position on Malone's all-time top performer list for this event but his 8.17 time inched closer to
Johnnie Legrair's all-time Pioneer best time of 8.15. In addition, his 8.17 time was an NCAA Div. II provisional national qualifying mark (currently the 17th-best time in the nation).
Â
Tim Makowski placed fifth, among 35 entrants, in the shot put at 47' 5.25", moving him into the seventh spot on Malone's all-time performers list.
Â
Mark Butler paced the team in the pole vault with a fifth-place effort of 14' 7.25" which now places him seventh on Malone's all-time performer list (taking that spot away from Pioneer head coach
Mark McClure who posted a 14' 6" indoor vault in 1991).
Â
Scott Whitaker and
Matt Hendrix placed fifth and sixth, respectively, among 29 runners in the 800 meters with respective times of 1:56.91 and 1:57.67. Whitaker's time was a personal best.
Â

Cameron Mack now holds the ninth spot on Malone's all-time performer list. Later in the evening, in the 200 meters, Mack's time of 23.17 seconds now places him ninth on that event's all-time Malone listing.

Eric Barto,
Marc Megenhardt, Whitaker and Hendrix posted a fifth-place time of 3:29.16 among 11 teams in the field.
