The Malone University baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at Saginaw Valley State (MI) University on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-2 in game one and 5-4 in the finale.

The Pioneers' record slipped to 15-19 overall and 10-9 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference following Saturday's action while the Cardinals improved to 8-18 overall and 5-11 in conference games.

The two teams will attempt to complete their three-game series on Sunday with a nine-inning game starting at 10:00 a.m.  Sunday's contest was originally slated for 12:00 p.m. but was moved up in an attempt to avoid forecasted rain.

Game One Recap
The Pioneers scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to grab a 2-1 lead in the opener.  However, SVSU managed to rally for the win in the seventh, securing the 3-2 walk-off triumph with a two-out, two-run single.

The Cardinals had grabbed a 1-0 advantage with an unearned run in the first inning. After Malone leftfielder Hayden Mobley led off the sixth with a single, catcher Matt Davis tied the game with an RBI single to right-center.  An SVSU error then put the visitors on top 2-1 moments later

Right-hander Jack McDonald started on the mound for Malone and tossed the first 6.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits.  Reliver Branden Carey was saddled with the loss (1-1) after surrendering the go-ahead run.

Mobley, Davis and designated hitter Michael Chack each tallied two hits to pace the Pioneer offense.

Game Two Recap
Malone jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the finale.  Centerfielder Keanan Locke got things started with a double and then came around to score on a Cardinal throwing error.  Davis then brought home the second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Cardinals knotted the score with a two-run double in the bottom of the first and then added two runs in the second and one run in the fourth to pull in front 5-2.

A two-out rally allowed Malone to pull within one run in the fifth.  Mobley chased home the first score of the inning with a single to center.  Chack later made it 5-4 by drawing a bases-loaded walk.

The Pioneers were unable to completely close the gap, though, as a groundout to the pitcher allowed Saginaw Valley State to escape the fifth without giving up any additional runs.  Malone put the tying run on base in the sixth and seventh but was unable to even the score, falling by the 5-4 final.

Starting pitcher Mike Shori suffered the loss (0-1) after giving up five runs (three earned) over three innings of work.  Reliever Joe Costello followed with three scoreless innings.

Locke finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
