Results The Malone University men's and women's swimming & diving teams competed in their first home meet of the 2014-15 season against neighboring school University of Mount Union Friday night in the C.T Branin Natatorium in Canton. The men came out on top with a winning score of 168-122 while the Pioneer women's team was defeated in a close meet 152-135.
"The team has been committed to the process thus far and their performances on the diving board and in the water today were ones they had to dig very deep for, and reflected that commitment," commented Malone head coach
Russ Hunt.
On the men's side, the Pioneers came out on top in every swimming event. The men had six members take home victories and also won both relays while the women's squad had four athletes come out with a victory while also winning the 400 free relay.
For the women, their first victory came in the 1000 yard freestyle by freshman
Carolin Friedrich with a time of 11:07.89.
Marta Jankowska followed up with a victory in the 200 yard freestyle at 2:02.37 and later also won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:16.40 and the 100 butterfly in 1:00.85, which was only .33 seconds off her own school record in the event that she set two seasons ago.
Charis Parker won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:07.54 and went on to win the 200 breaststroke as well in 2:28.45.
After her win in the 1000 free, Friedrich also captured the 500 freestyle event with a time of 5:25.76, which was just a mere .49 seconds off her own school record that she set last Friday at Findlay. The women ended the meet with a victory as 400 free relayers
Olivia Bently, Jankowska, Friedrich and
Stephanie Brookens posted the win with a time of a 3:45.94 (roughly 1 ½ seconds off the school-record pace set last season). In the diving competition,
Kaitlyn Hoch was also able to capture a victory in the 3-meter diving event, however, points were not available for either the 1-meter or 3-meter diving competition.
For the men, the 200 medley relay unit consisting of
Zachary Misak,
Bartosz Zarzecki,
Florian Zellin and
Hector Gonzalez started things off with a win in a time of 1:36.03.
Romano Hoffmann won the 1000 free with a 10:17.37 and also took the 200 individual medley in 1:59.24 while
Cory Boogaart won the 200 free at 1:44.28. Misak came out on top in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.82 seconds and also won the 200 back in 1:58.00 while Zarzecki won the 100 breaststroke in 58.65 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.79.
In the 200 butterfly, it was Zellin who touched the pad first in 2:02.67. He later also won the 100 butterfly in 52.70 seconds. The men were able to take first, second and third in the 50 freestyle with Gonzalaz leading the way in 21.90. Gonzalez then won the next event, the 100 yard freestyle, with a time of 48.33.
Tim Collet won the 500 freestyle in an exciting race that came down to the final few strokes with a time of 4:55.07. The men finished the meet with a victory in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:13.11. The members of this victorious relay were Boogaart, Christoph Eckard, Zarzecki and Gonzalez.
"The men were able to utilize their depth today and the women battled today, capped off by a great relay win," Hunt said. "I look forward to seeing how the team responds in the coming days and weeks."
The Pioneers will be competing again next Friday, October 31st in another home meet as the squads will host Wheeling Jesuit University (WV) in a 6:00 p.m. contest.
