Game One Recap
The Yellow Jackets grabbed an early lead in the opener by plating a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Malone cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame as second baseman
Tyler Eagon crossed the plate on a fielder's choice groundout by shortstop
Bryce Miller.
BW then strung four straight singles together in the top of the fifth, bringing home three more runs to stretch its lead to 5-1.
Malone rallied back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three times to trim the Yellow Jacket lead to 5-4. Much like BW had done in the top of the inning, the Pioneers managed to register five straight singles in the bottom of the frame. Centerfielder
Daulton Ritter got things started with a two-out single to center. Miller, rightfielder
Michael Chack, and first baseman
Jon Crank each followed with base hits. Third baseman
Bob Suitca then stepped to the plate and lined another single to center. Crank went from first to third on the play and then tried to score when the throw from the outfield got past the Yellow Jacket third baseman. However, BW quickly recovered the ball and fired home, cutting down the potential tying run at the plate.
With his squad up 5-4, Yellow Jacket reliever Tom Loeffler then entered the game in the sixth and proceeded to work two scoreless innings, cementing the victory while notching his first save of the season.
Alex Albright started on the mound for Baldwin Wallace and picked up the victory (1-1) after tossing the first five innings.
Tyler Whitlach pitched the first four innings for the Pioneers and suffered the loss (2-5) after surrendering five runs on seven hits.
Malone registered nine hits in the contest as Eagon, Ritter and Suitca each tallied two hits in three at-bats.
Game Two Recap
Baldwin Wallace scored three times in the top of the first inning and once more in the second to take a 4-0 lead in the finale. Malone pulled to within 4-3 in the third inning thanks to a two-run double by Suitca and a sacrifice fly by catcher
Hayden Mobley.
However, 4-3 was as close as the Pioneers would get as the Yellow Jackets took command with a four-run fourth inning.
Anthony Alioto Jr. went the distance on the mound for BW, surrendering three runs (one earned) on six hits.
Joe Costello made his first career start and took the loss for MU (1-1) after working the first 3.1 innings.
Leftfielder Brendan Toughey went 2-for-4 from the lead-off spot for BW. The senior crossed the plate twice in Tuesday's second contest to become the Yellow Jackets' single-season record holder for runs scored with 54.
The Pioneers tallied six hits - one each for Chack, Crank, Suitca, Eagon, leftfielder
Keanan Locke and centerfielder
Rich Mast.
