The Malone University baseball team tallied a 1-1 record in a pair of nine-inning games at the Tucson Invitational on Thursday. The Pioneers opened the day with a 13-3 loss to Concordia University Chicago before rebounding later in the evening to down Dakota Wesleyan (SD) University by a 12-2 final.
Malone (6-5 overall) will wrap up its spring break trip to Arizona on Friday with a 12:00 p.m. MST (2:00 p.m. EST) twinbill against Peru State (NE) College.
Game One Recap
The Cougars (5-0 overall) broke open Thursday's opener with an eight-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth inning. Concordia Chicago entered the frame leading 5-2 and then utilized five base hits, four walks and a pair of Pioneer fielding miscues to break the game open.
Malone committed five errors in the nine-inning contest, leading to six unearned runs for the Cougars. Left-hander
Alex Haines started on the mound and took the loss (1-1) after giving up 10 runs (only five of which were earned) over the first 5.1 innings.

Game Two Recap
The Pioneers racked up a season-high 18 hits in Thursday's finale at Kino Stadium, home of the AAA Tucson Padres. Malone led 5-0 after five innings and then put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth, plating a total of four runs in the frame on a two-run homer by Suitca and two-out, two-run double by leftfielder
Keanan Locke.
Starting pitcher
Jared Messer worked eight strong innings to pick up his second victory of the season (2-0). Messer limited Dakota Wesleyan (7-9 overall) to two runs on six hits while striking out nine.
Locke posted three hits in four at-bats, adding an RBI single in the eighth to go with his two-run double in the sixth. Second baseman

Matt Davis both went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI's. Miller also totaled three hits while scoring four runs.
