Pioneers Compete At GVSU's Laker Early Bird, KSU's Golden Flash Gala; Tina Oprean Sets New School Mark In 5000

The Malone University men's and women's indoor track & field teams opened the 2013-14 campaign on Friday by sending student-athletes to a pair of meets – Grand Valley State University's (MI) Laker Early Bird and Kent State University's Golden Flash Gala.  Numerous personal records and one new school record were registered.

At the GVSU meet, three Pioneer women posted personal bests in the 5000 meters as Tina Oprean, with an eighth-place finish, recorded a PR of 17:26.44, which was also a new school indoor record in the event.  Sarah Meek also notched a PR in 17:29.26 (9th) as did Sara Polatas in 17:40.99 (11th).  All three times were NCAA Div. II provisional national qualifying times.

In the men's 5000 meters, Nick Fresenko pocketed a PR in the race with a provisional qualifying time of 14:53.94 (8th).

In the women's 3000 meters, Mackenzie Keller captured the race in a time of 10:44.39 while Mattison Rankin placed second in a personal-best time of 10:46.45.

Mitch Williams won the men's 5000 meters in a provisional qualifying time of 8:31.09 while Scott Whitaker finished in second place in a time of 8:39.55.  Both efforts were PR's for the runners.

On the first of two days of competition at the Golden Flash Gala, the Malone men's and women's teams had competitors in numerous events.

For the men's team, Jarod Williams paced a four-man Malone contingent in the 5000 meters in a second-place time of 15:02.87 while Luis Carbajal was close behind in fifth place in 15:07.48.

In field events, Duke Taylor led the Pioneers in the weight throw with a 12th-place toss of 52' 2.5".

For the Malone women, Jaylyn Vance paced the team in the long jump at 17'0" (4th) while Lyndsey Bates led the Pioneers in the weight throw event with an 11th-place finish after a toss of 50' 1.75".

On the track, Emily Tomei paced the Pioneers in the 5000 meters in a 10th-place time of 19:41.81.

The Golden Flash Gala will conclude tomorrow (Saturday) with events beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Live results are available for this meet.
