Women's Soccer Freshman Christine Najar poked home the game-winning goal in overtime

Najjar's Overtime Winner Snaps Six-Game Losing Skid

Box Score

Freshman Christine Najjar scored an overtime goal with 47 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give the Malone University women's soccer team (4-7-1, 1-6 GLIAC) a 1-0 home victory over Mercyhurst College (PA) and snap a six game losing streak.

Najjar poked home a rebound that slipped through the Mercyhurst keeper's hands after senior Ally Smith's free kick skipped off the wet turf en route to the goal.

Sophomore Staci Hackett and junior Sam Soeder teamed up to record a combined shutout. Hackett started in goal and made five first-half saves before giving way to Soeder. The junior matched Hackett's solid effort, recording a total of seven saves in the second half and overtime period to earn her first win of the season.

Mercyhurst, playing a depleted Malone side, looked the more likely to score for the majority of the game, outshooting the Pioneers 26-7. Malone was the beneficiary of some good fortune as two Mercyhurst shots glanced off the crossbar. However, Malone's defensive structure did not waver and they capitalized on their opportunity in crunch time to pick up the win.

The Pioneers will try to avenge a 1-0 loss to Walsh University earlier this year in their next game when they host the Cavaliers in a conference matchup at 1:00 pm this Saturday, October, 19th.  Live stats will be available during the contest at http://www.sidearmstats.com/malone/wsoc/
