The Malone University men's soccer team fell victim to some harsh luck as an own goal stood up as the winner in a 2-1 loss at Ashland University (3-0-1, 2-0 GLIAC) Friday evening.
For the second consecutive game Malone (0-3, 0-2 GLIAC) fell into an early hole by conceding a goal in the game's first 10 minutes. Ashland's Andrew Over scored his first goal of the year just six minutes in after receiving an Adam Mitchell cross and placing it in the goal's top corner. However, the Pioneers were quick to respond. Freshman
Sam Tonelli knotted the game at 1 in the 27th minute converting a rebound after junior
Josh Abend's initial shot was spilled by the Ashland keeper. It was Tonelli's first career goal and points. The teams would head into intermission tied 1-1.
A reoccurring theme early in Malone's season is yielding early goals at the start of halves and it bit Malone once again. This time disaster struck in the 55th minute when an Ashland attacker miss hit his shot attempt. Unfortunately, his flailing shot redirected off the shin of an unsuspecting
Bryan Smith and inside the far post. The unfortunate bounce would prove to be the difference as the Eagles kept the Pioneers off the board the rest of the way.
Ashland outshot Malone 20-13 for the match but shots on goal were only 7-6 in favor of the Eagles. Junior
Kelvin Aquino paced the Pioneers with four shots. Junior goalkeeper
Felipe Monteiro fell to 0-3 on the season despite registering five saves. Malone will look to rebound Sunday Sept. 16th when the squad plays at Notre Dame College (OH) at 2:00 p.m. NDC will provide live audio of the match at
