The Malone University men's golf team made it two for two in 2012 spring tournaments by emerging victorious at the University of St. Francis (IN) Invitational Friday and Saturday. Among a 10-team field, the Pioneers claimed a first-place finish for the second straight weekend after pocketing last weekend's Capital University Purple & White Invitational.
At the Cobblestone Golf Course (par 71) and the Noble Hawk Golf Course (par 72), in Kendallville, Indiana, Malone tallied a blistering two-day score of 569 (282-287) for a three-under-par total and an impressive 34-stroke margin of victory over runner-up Madonna (MI) University, which posted a 603 (299-304), +31 team score. The Pioneers' margin of victory at this event was more than double the 15-stroke edge they posted last weekend.
Calumet College of St. Joseph (IN) finished third at 607 (305-302), Bethel (IN) College placed fourth at 619 (309-310) and host St. Francis rounded out the top five at 631 (320-311).
Of the 54 golfers in the field, four athletes posted a total score below par and, incredibly, three of those were Pioneer golfers with
Jon Clark leading the way as he tied for overall medalist honors with a five-under-par 138 (67-71).
Tyler Light was right behind in third place at four-under-par with a two-day score of 139 (71-68) while Jay
Jay Hollifield took fourth overall with a minus-one 142 (69-73).
Nathan Tarter, who was the medalist at last weekend's Purple & White tourney, placed in a tie for sixth overall at +8 with a score of 151 (76-75). In addition,
Ryan Headley tied for 12th overall at +11 with a two-day total of 154 (75-79).
Malone will attempt to make it three for three when the squad competes at the Indiana Wesleyan University Invitational at the Brickyard Crossings Golf Course in Indianapolis, Indiana on Monday and Tuesday (April 9-10). The event is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. on Monday.
