The Malone University men's golf team captured its own Malone Invitational on Saturday afternoon after expanding on its first-round lead from Friday. At the par-72 Tannenhauf Golf Course in Alliance, Ohio, the Pioneers posted a one-under-par score of 287 on day two of the event to go with the even-par score of 288 that the squad tallied on Friday.
Malone finished with a two-day score of 575 (one-under-par overall) and defeated runner-up Huntington (IN) University, which posted a score of 589 (291-298), by 14 strokes. The Pioneers had held only a three-stroke lead after Friday's first round.
Notre Dame (OH) College took third at 634 (316-318), the University of Northwestern Ohio placed fourth at 635 (332-303), Grove City (PA) College was fifth at 645 (321-324), Mercyhurst (PA) College came in sixth at 656 (321-335) and Mt. Vernon Nazarene University rounded out the team scoring in seventh place at 669 (334-335).
The Pioneers'
Jay Hollifield, who was leading the field after firing a first-round two-under-par score of 70 on Friday, pocketed medalist honors at the event, among 53 golfers, by carding a 71 on Saturday for a 141 total overall.
Tyler Light, who scorched the course with a day-two score of 69, finished second overall and just one stroke back at 142 (73-69).
Nathan Tarter made it a 1-2-3 finish for Malone as he placed third overall at 144 (72-72) while
Ryan Headley finished sixth overall at 148 (73-75). In addition,
Jon Clark also competed on the Malone A squad and posted a 151 (75-76) to finish in a tie for eighth.
Other Pioneer golfers who competed as individuals at the tournament included
Garrison Myles at 151 (77-74; T8),
Richie Schembechler at 154 (79-75; T12),
Matt Ludlow at 163 (81-82; T26),
Connor McCaulley at 164 (87-77; T30) and
Tommy Miano at 165 (85-80; 32nd).
Malone will be back in action on Tuesday (April 17th) as the team competes at the Nye Intercollegiate at the Wooster Country Club, hosted by the College of Wooster, at 10:00 a.m.
