Final Individual Results
With the best score of any team on the second and final day of the NAIA Classic, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University, on Tuesday, the Malone University men's golf team rallied from 11 strokes back after the first round to capture the team title after winning it in a playoff with Grand View (IA) University, the #3 ranked team in the NAIA. The tournament victory was the third straight for Malone in as many events this spring.
At the par 72 Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Indianapolis, Indiana, among a 17-team field, the Pioneers posted a second round score of 301 and a two-day score of 603 (302-301) to match Grand View, which shot a score of 312 on the final day for its own 603 score (291-312). Malone then took the team title in a playoff format in which all five players from each team play a designated hole. Each team uses its lowest four scores and the winner is the team with the lowest combined score for that hole. On the first playoff hole, the Pioneers easily won the hole, and thus the team title, by posting a score of -1 (three pars, and one birdie, by
Jay Hollifield) as Grand View carded a +3.
Point Loma Nazarene (CA) University finished third at 611 (305-306), Johnson & Wales (FL) University took fourth at 612 (308-304) and William Woods (MO) University rounded out the top five with a score of 618 (307-311). Eight of the top 20 teams in the current NAIA national rankings competed in the event.
Among 89 golfers in the field, Malone's
Nathan Tarter earned a runner-up finish with a score of 145 (71-74) to pace the Pioneers while
Jon Clark finished second for the team and tied for 11th overall at 152 (76-76).
Tyler Light fired a two-day score of 153 (79-74) to tie for 14th,
Jay Hollifield tied for 22nd with a final tally of 155 (76-79) and
Ryan Headley finished with a score of 162 (85-77).
Next up for the Pioneers is their own Malone Invitational in which both the A and B Malone teams will compete. The tourney is set for this Friday and Saturday (April 13-14) at the Tannenhauf Golf Course in Alliance and the event will begin at 10:00 a.m. each day.
