Men's Golf Captures Purple & White Invitational; Nathan Tarter Earns Medalist Honors

Junior Tyler Light finished second for Malone and tied for fourth overall with a score of 150 (73-77) to help Malone to a victory at the Purple & White Invitational Friday and Saturday. Teammate and junior transfer Nathan Tarter (action photo not available) was the overall medalist at the event with a four-under-par score of 140 (69-71).


Final Results

The Malone University men's golf team, competing in its first event of the 2012 spring season, captured the two-day Capital University Purple & White Invitational in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday.  After leading the event by 12 strokes at the conclusion of Friday's first round, the Pioneers again posted the day's best round on Saturday and pocketed the victory among the six-team field.

At the par-72 Foxfire Players Club on Saturday, Malone posted a team score of 310 and tallied a two-day score of 593 (283-310) to defeat runner-up Madonna (MI) University, which finished at 311 on Saturday and 608 overall (297-311), by a margin of 15 strokes.  Columbus State Community College was third with a 616 total score (296-320), Bethel (IN) College and Capital came in at 619 (Bethel:305-314; Capital:295-324) to tie for fourth place, and Walsh University finished sixth at 628 (305-323).

Junior transfer Nathan Tarter continued his stellar play, following up his three-under-par 69 on Friday with a round of 71 on Saturday for a 140 total which earned him medalist honors by a two-stroke margin. 

Tyler Light came in second for Malone and tied for fourth overall with a score of 150 (73-77) while Ryan Headley was close behind in a tie for sixth overall at 152 (72-80).  In addition, Jay Hollifield carded a 153 (71-82) and Richie Schembechler posted a 154 (71-83).

Malone will be back in action next Friday and Saturday (April 6-7) when the team competes at the University of Saint Francis (IN) Invitational.
